RFA Training Pipeline

Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone can help me, I'm half way through the applying for the RFA to join as a 3rd EOOW.
I already have my ticket and necessary paperwork though for the interview I have been asked to learn about the training pipeline. Is this the 10 week initial basic training?
If so what does it consist of exactly.

Will there be any further training given other than this?

The 10 weeks at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) is part of it, however this is one of those questions where they can tell how much research you have done as not all the information is in the public domain or easy to find.

What they mean by pipeline is the training route to get you to where you need to be ...

So the first part would be what training will the RFA require you to pass before they allow you sign onboard as a 3/O(E).

The second part of the question could be what training will you need to do to have ticked all the boxes to be considered for promotion to 2/O(E). ie what training could you take whilst working for us as a 3/O(E).

For part 1) The wonderfully helpful RFA_at_HMS_Raleigh will be able to give you details (he also has done serious time at BRNC), or they can also be found by giving these forums a search.

As a guess, since you already have your CoC, they will require you to go to BRNC (Dartmouth); redo your STCW Firefighting and Sea Survival at the RN's school (in Portsmouth); and depending on your High Voltage certification they also might require you to go and do the Operational level course with the RN as well (in Gosport).

For part 2) I would ask the recruiter for a current copy of the RFA's "ME Officer Career Development Framework" this contains details of everything you need to do in the way of experience and training courses to go from 3/O(E) band C to Chief Engineer Band A (or even Commodore(E) ).

Thanks for your in put I was unsure if training pipeline applied solely to the position or to the entire route through to chief engineer.

According to BR 3 the training is 6 weeks in BRNC.

Any chance of you giving the chapter / section in BR3 you found this?

6 weeks is less than 1 BRNC term .. and that is how long the RFA are normally there for. To me it seems more the length of the bootcamp period that Navy Cadets (and occasionally RFA depending on how our course is configured) go through at Dartmouth.

Yes it’s BR 3(1) Chapter 14. I have an interview for SE (qualified) soon so if anyone has any tips for passing the interview / and areas to brush up on engineering wise please share. Thanks in advance.

These sort of things are easier if we know a bit more your background.

But essentially like any candidate qualified or otherwise the interviewers will want to know your depth of Service Knowledge, who we are, where we came from and how we got to this point. They will also want to know that you understand what your obligations are as a sponsored reservist.

On a specialist/qualified point of view they want to ensure that, with a couple of short courses they can drop you straight on a ship and have you perform the role of a Systems Engineer. So they will want to ensure that you have a good idea of what your job will be, what systems you will work on, what your background experience is and how it maps to this role.

Hopefully someone who has been through this more recently can help you out with some details (for me the pain was around a decade ago and so the memory has faded a little)

there is lots of stuff on here for the Brnc elements, mostly leadership exercises building up to the Maritime exercice MARL. If you also search my posts you will see some questions that should probably be able to answer. Additioanlly for 3/O(E) will do other courses such as a Basic Sea survival course teaching damage control over and above that of your previous STCW firefighting courses. You will also get a gas mask.
