RFA or Royal Navy? Older applicant

I am 35 and due to the current situation looking at changing careers I did have a place in the Merchant Navy cadetship but unfortunately due to personal reasons I was unable to take it which I still regret. I'm not sure what one to go for as I have A levels,GCSEs and a History degree.

Do you like the look of any of these, Clover?

The Logistics Officer looks interesting but then compared to my job before the pandemic as an Exam Invigilator anything is more interesting. I am looking for something more practical than that. I was being considered for the engineering cadetship with the merchant navy. Also what is the difference between entering as an Officer or a rating? I'm sorry for these questions but all my family were in the merchant navy or the army.

There is another Officer entry role which I should have added to the ones I suggested.

The difference between officers and ratings is that officers are senior management and aren't hands on, ratings start at the bottom as the "doers" and work their way up to middle management and tend to remain hands on, although some Senior Rates try and run their departments from the mess!

Thank you I am looking at a more hands on career because I have experience of not being hands on and it is very boring to me. Can you apply for the RFA and the Royal Navy at the same time or is that not allowed? What is the best way to practice the NSRT? Does the RFA have a similar test? Thank you all for your help

Something I would say, Clover, is to be aware of the age limits for applications to the Royal Navy and the RFA.

The limit for the RN roles I have suggested is 39 - if you don't get into one of those now, they won't be an option later. The RFA roles have no upper limit (technically) and may be an option for you if you wished to look at them towards the end of your Naval career.

I'm trying to gauge what I think you are looking for, based on what you are saying.

You say that you want something 'hands on' and don't want to be bored.

I would suggest Warfare Officer. What do you think?

I think that you would love your training at BRNC. You want to be busy, don't you?

Yes that looks really interesting thank you for your help
Something you might want to do at this point is think about your physical fitness, Clover. I know that you are just thinking things through at the moment, but you will find it helpful later if you start putting in a little extra now in terms of fitness. At this stage, going out for a 20 minute walk most days will be a way of easing back into physical fitness and putting yourself in a position to pass the PJFT (a 2..4 km run)

I was swimming four times a week before lockdown I am going out for walks most days but I have definitely lost condition with the lockdown even with my friends workout. I need to work on my running definitely it is not a strong point.

In the same situation myself. Was in a very boring job before this but it paid the bills but now I'm looking at finally joining but my fitness is poor at best I walk 3 or 4 miles most days just haven't jogged since school 14 years ago. Keep at it we will get there and i hope where training in the same group so I wont be the oldest ha ha

I hope so to I am currently researching a few different roles at the moment. So undecided but I guess it's a big decision. I looked at the running time 16 minutes for 1.5 miles. At least I have a goal aiming to be faster than that

I should hope so! Could probably walk it.

Good luck though.

I'm looking at Engineering Technician, Communication Specialist, Hydrography and Meteorology Officer and Survival Equipment Technician and Logistics so at least you have narrowed it down more than I have.

That is one hell of a wide range of branches. Just think of what interests you the most, coupled with your future plans.
