Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what the "RFA Allowance" is supposed to be used for, is it for travel to and from Ships or do you get travel warrants for that?

Hi All,

It is an element of pay. More money in your pocket.

Way back in the distant mists of time (i.e. the 1990s and before) the RFA used to pay double-time for service in a war zone, as is common in Merchant contracts. After parking a ship in a designated warzone for an extended period (Split, Croatia), they realised that this was getting expensive and they would have to move the goalposts. The first move was to redraw the warzone boundary so that the part of the jetty where the RFA berthed was outside, whilst the rest of the jetty was inside the warzone. The long-term solution was to change the contract so that instead of paying double-bubble for service in a warzone, only whilst serving in a warzone, they would pay an 'RFA allowance' as part of salary at all times, whether in a warzone or not.

Rail warrants are dead, you book a ticket through Defence Travel Reservations and charge it against the UIN.

Thanks for that.
Could you also help with rates of pay? Ive looked all over the web and apart from starting rates cant find any info. How quickly can you advance from the starting pay of 16k (+rfa allowance)?

Sounds stupid, but does anyone know how the recruitment process actually works?

I'm hearing that it can take years to actually get in..

Are Deck Hands being recruited right now?

During a phone call to RFA recruiting I was told that although not currently advertised recruiting would start soon for Deck hands.
I was sent an application form which I have returned and have my recruiting test this week, I believe that after this a sift is carried out and applicants are selected for interview and if successful then have the medical (ENG1).
I believe that the next intake will be in May.
There is a question and answer session on the Royal navy recruiting pages on Facebook tomorrow early evening with a 2nd Officer from the RFA.

Hope this helps.

Wow thanks Gary that's great info

How soon was it after sending your app form that you were invited for recruiting test?

And any idea of % of candidates which make it all the way?

Cheers good luck with recruiting test

No idea how many make it!
After recieving an email from the RFA confirming receipt of my application they said that the local careers office would contact me for my test but said it might take a while.
I contacted the careers office myself and managed to get a test within a fortnight.
Apart from the test which they send on to the RFA the careers office has nothing to do with the process.

Hi Gary/Rumbox

Im also sending an application, they are recruiting now for deck hands. dont think i have to do a test as i have served in the Royal Navy in the past. I am sending off my application tomorrow. Gary / Rumbox have you served in the RN or MN in the past? I only know one person who is serving with the RFA at present and am trying to make contact with them through FB for info. The guys on this thread are very helpful as you can see from the answers from past questions. There is another forum 'tootp' but it has been down for months for some reason.

I can't remember if there is any sort of incremental pay scale for SG2s. There maybe used to be one based on age, and that might be what I am thinking of, in which case Age Discrimination Act will have changed things. There are no increments for qualified ratings, but could be different for trainees.

To reach SG1B - qualified with EDH certificate - requires 12 months sea time, plus a bit at college (well, it's HMS Raleigh now). Should take 2-3 years. SG1B is paid a little less than SG1A but I don't remember how much less. Another 12 months sea time gets you an AB's certificate and bumped up to SG1A.

I just had a look at some sample RT questions and it all seems very straightforward

Luminox, do you remember doing the RT test before you joined the RN?

I haven't served in either RN or MN, I'm just looking for something completely different, I love being at sea and the RFA sounds awesome!

It was a good few years ago now rumbox, its all pretty basic if your good at maths etc. Im not great at maths but got on ok for the branch i wanted to get into in the RN. Few problem solving questions if i remember rightly. I think if you go on the the RN section of this website there will be plenty on the RT Test. If you have been out of school a while may be worth doing some math, problem solving, english papers online. I was 22 when i done my RT test so a bit of practice was needed.
What are you donig for a job at present? Have you been to sea in the past at all?

New bit of info, RFA pay is now;
year one 16656 + 3072,
year two 17409 + 3072,
year three 20846 + 3072.
These are SG2 increments not promotion, pay for SG1a and SG1b is higher.
