Reserves as a student job (ex-regular)

Hi, im currently serving as an LETME(SM), however i will be leaving in august to go to university (thank you FEHE). the course i will be doing involves various placements and shift work, so a regular part time student job would be difficult to fit around this. I was looking to transfer using project firefly.
Would the reserves be a good place to earn a decent bit of cash while i study? not looking for the rock star wages submariners are used to, just a few hundred to float me through the month.
Also, as i'll have long periods of leave from uni over the summer/ winter, are there opportunities to utilise this time for a small deployment? how long to they typically last? and how much can i earn?

I'd suspect so - esp the RNR Engineer Branch, which just ex-Regs, and they can do all kinds of stuff.

I've had them come out to South Africa for three weeks to help out during a deployed maintenance period.

Greetings.

You are correct to Firefly, as this saves a huge amount of nausea into the future. As an aside I always advise leavers, who are even only considering the RNR to go Firefly. If the civvy world turns out to be your oyster then leaving the RNR is easy, it's not the same as working notice in the regular service.

Being a stoker, in old money, you will have plenty of opportunity, as I understand it*. The RNR Engineering branch is one of the "national branches" in that they are controlled centrally. They deliver a capability that "normal reservists" could never possibly do. Have a look "next door" for the adventures of Ravers; Assuming that you have a Defence Gateway Account have a search for RNR Engineering Branch and many questions will be answered there.

You still attend your local unit for drill nights. A good unit will rapidly use your RN skills to their advantage. I always recommend engaging with your local unit, as they should help getting you sorted, even if you are in a National Unit.

Your rate of pay will remain the same, although our rate of X factor is reduced.

Having said all that, and now moving into RN stuff on which I might not have the full picture, is now a good time to leave the regular service? will your course actually start in August? Should you look at 1SL's offer to extend you until C-19 is under control?

The RNR eng branch is definitely a good bet.

100% do the seamless transfer thing. Once you’re across you can always leave if it’s not for you, but if you don’t seamless transfer and then decide to join the RNR at a later date, it can take up to a year to go through the recruitment process.

Employment in the branch is pretty flexible depending on your skills and what you can bring to the party.

Personally I live miles away from any RNR units so it’s better for me to smash out my days in a oner, doing 2 or 3 weeks on ships in one go.

Other people do one day a week in the dockyard, others adopt a more traditional RNR model, going to their local unit on weds evenings and the odd weekend.

Of course you can do a mix of the above if that works.

The biggest thing is having an understanding civvy employer who will give you the time off to do this. I get 10 additional days paid leave for RNR stuff plus as much unpaid leave as I want within reason.

You’re unlikely to get this if you work for a small family business.

Fire over any questions you want. And have a read of this, the RNR specific stuff starts from page 35.

this is great info, thanks. im actually looking to become a paramedic, so getting out and going through uni is my only option, im praying covid-19 will have died down by september. if what you said it true i will 100% be transfering over now. never know, might even get a few jollies in haha, i have only managed 2 in the 12 years i have done so far.

If you are going to uni for paramedic training, also look at 335 Medical Evacuation Regiment RAMC

If only to see a pongo with a set of Dolphins...
