Rejoiners and beards

Altrius

Midshipman
I am/will be a rejoiner, and as such, I must attend Raleigh for a few days, and then go straight to Phase 2.
Now, I know Phase 2 recruits are generally allowed a beard, but, as a rejoiner, would I be allowed to turn up with a full set to Raleigh, and have my I.D. issued, with said beard? During my time in the RN, I had said beard, with the I.D. card to match, as it was deemed to be a good set, and good enough to sport within the RN itsself.

I appreciate generally, permission is meant to be sought for said beard, but I thought I would ask just incase.

Thank you.

Hmmn, interesting one. The one thing Raleigh are particularly hot on is rejoiners pitching-up correctly attired, ie: suit, shirt & tie, but I've not heard anything about a requirement for trained re-entry ratings arriving clean-shaven.

There are basically three types of re-entrants: trained, part-trained & untrained.

Those joining as trained ratings requiring neither Initial or Phase Two training may well be OK but those who are joining as part-trained ratings are essentially going to be subject to the same rules as any other trainee, I'd have thought.

Best bet? Give your AFCO a bell, they can get in touch with Raleigh to double-check for you. When I joined, you were allowed a beard as a trainee at Raleigh and didn't swear an oath upon entry, but times they are a changin'....

when you joined Ninja they did not have official numbers, first names were used as you all knew each other, you're right times have been changing

Hmm, very good point(s) made there, Ninja. Definitely a tough one.

I think giving the AFCO a ring, just in case, may be the best bet.

With Raleigh being (understandably) tough on people joining with the correct attire, I thought I'd double check, rather than arriving suited and booted, and not being clean shaven.

Thank you very much for the prompt response.

Hi

Have you done your induction at Raleigh yet?

I'll be doing one soon was wondering what it entails.

It will depend on what sex you are.

HMS Raleigh as of a couple of days ago now allow phase 2 recruits to grow a beard with a chit handed in. Beards must be 5mm and shorter than 25 mm within 2 weeks. Probably due to the fact that the MA's have been swamped with recruits asking for beard chits due to shaving rashes.
Obviously all AFCO's know this anyway?

Probably not as there are a several different phase two training establishments and local orders can differ, so we would not issue sweeping statements about phase two regulations.

Those rejoining as part trained re-entrants and going straight into phase two may only be at Raleigh for three days, depending on branch.

Generally we focus on first time joiners going to Raleigh, Lympstone, BRNC & RMSM, those rejoining the mob are expected to be more self-aware of their chosen branch.
