Changing jobs will not work as he needs to get manning clearance and they won't give it if he's getting made redundant. ...

Just to add for the sake of completeness:

This is MOST unlikely to be helpful in many cases, but personnel who have been selected for redundancy remain eligible to apply to transfer between Services or between branches and specialisations within the Naval Service:

"Transfers will only be considered into areas of shortage in the current or future force, such as Operational Pinch Points (OPPs) and Critical Manning Groups (CMGs).... Opportunities are expected to be very limited."

He should refer to relevant official documents and consult his DO if this is of interest.

Good luck to him.

There is definitely a DIN detailing OPPs and CMGs which was released the same day everybody was handed their envelopes. Not many choices in it but some may be of interest to those who wish to apply for transfer.

Well, I never! The expression, "Life's a shit sandwich and every day is another bite", was in use throughout my service and I first heard it from a bootneck sergeant in CTCRM in 1966. So how old are you?

I know. And I said I didn't invent it. Are you drunk?

The immortal words were to the best of my knowledge first spoken by King Leonidas when he addressed his troops just before their suicidal battle against the hordes of Xerxes at the pass of Thermopylae 480 BC, I can only assume that the Bootneck Stripey that Bandy_E refers to was one of the few survivors.

Montigny-La-Palisse would never be so vulgar as to not accept an apology as he strikes me as being an all-round erudite bon-oeuf.

You still owe me one for making me waste at least 10 superlative put-downs on you. It's like the battle of Mboto Gorge every time..

Funny, that. He was referred to by his peers as "Mick the Greek", so you may have something there.

Nicks,

I will try to answer your questions as fully as I can:

The whole situation about his job is fairly easy to explain, his 'position' has been made redundant not his 'job', therefore the redundancies have been bought in to draw the RN down by circa 5000 personnel, so those 5000 'positions' will be gone, i.e. the RN won't go back above the 30,000 or so that we will be at once redundancy is complete. So, although they will still recruit people to do the same 'job' that your sone did (ET(WE)) no-one will be taking his 'position', as they won't go over the 30,000 'positions'.

With regard to your son 're-catting', as I have already said tell him to speak to his DO and to look for the relevant DINs himself on the MOD Intranet, there is some VERY useful information available to those selected for redundancy.

I would also add that you should not worry too much s he will not be left in the dark, there will be a good support system in place for those selected for redundancy, the RN isn't going to just kick them out.

Hope this helps,

Good luck
Thanks for the info.

Spoke to him on Thursday and he is appealing against the decision and also his DO and Skipper are writing letters on his behalf, although what good that will do I dont really know !

LET(ME)s are not being considered during the entire redundancy process which is due to complete by March 2015. That information was in a galaxy message before Christmas and is also contained in a DIN detailing all branches and rates that are not being looked at.
