Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. :thumright: Hi i have my tests this wednesday the 28th May can anyone tell me what the pass marks for the tests are and if all have to be passed or if it is a total pass for all added together - i'll be 16 in august hoping to join the navy as a weapons engineer or warfare specialist thank you
  2. Hi mate, the pass mark depends on the branch you have chosen. The more technical the branch the higher pass rate you need. However you only need at least 50% too actually get to the next stage of selection. Hope this helps.
  3. Welcome Gibbo, I`d like to know the answer to that one myself, just to see if i could qualify as well, but I`m told that Ninja is your man, he`ll be along shortly, have patience.
  4. Lol, PTBS (piss taking bar-steward)

I think you should aim for 100% That way you will be sure of doing your best. If you get 100% then the world is your oyster, if not then you know you could have done no more and the job you get (or chose with your options open to you at that time) is best suited to you.

The Recruiting Test is 4 part multiple choice, 30 questions in each section & as stated by Duggers you should aim to get a minimum of 50% correct in each of the 4 sections to be assured of a good pass & to leave viable job options in the Navy, should you not make the physical grade as an Engineering Technician. If you score less than ten out of 30 in the English or maths sections, it's an automatic fail for any job. The questions aren't hard, but you need to work fast. If you fail it's 12 months for a re-sit, so beware falling at the first hurdle

You get a free practice test booklet from the AFCO which is an excellent guide to what to expect. Online tests are of limited value as it's a paper & pencil test, however a lot of people say the Brain Training games on a DS helped them.

A very good free online Psychometric Test can be found on the Practice Tests website
BUT: Top tip guys, the site is merely used to test out testing systems, so don't put your real ID or email details on the site- just enter spoof data. You should go through the test as fast as you can to simulate the real thing. To my mind it’s probably the most representative of the tests available, albeit online rather than paper & pencil.

A good book to maybe borrow from a library (harder than the test, but good for practice- IF you feel you need it) is IQ & Psychometric Testing by Phillip Carter another one, believe it or not is the Verbal, Non-Verbal & mathematics sections of 11+ Mixed Papers. It sounds mad but the questions are virtually identical- again it's the timescales that make it difficult. You only have 9 minutes to complete 30 questions in the verbal section, same again in the non-verbal & 16 minutes for the 30 maths questions. Sounds easy- try it!

The generic: Practice Tests for the Armed Forces: Entry Level (ISBN: 9780340926550)is reasonable in my opinion, but possibly a little easier than the real thing. The Ultimate Psychometric Test Book is another reasonable example to borrow from your nearest library.

The overiding advice, is these example tests need not cost you a penny, so don't be suckered into buying something you can borrow or download for nothing.
  6. Make sure you try a couple of test papers so you know what to expect. I did mine a few months back and i'd say 50% of the people (7/8) didn't score high enough for the class chosen. Although it's hardly rocket science, don't turn up expecting to pass if you haven't bothered to prepare.

I could have taken mine with a group of idiots i guess :)
  7. 50% is 4/8

    7/8 is 87.5%

  8. got mine on thursday
    i hope i pass
revising as much as i can
  9. being a boring sunday afternoon, I thought I try the online practice test site, So off I go with NRM1, flew through it and got to Q18, and all of a sudden I am stumped, the right answer is not there.

    Q18 is
    3.18 is to 1.06 as 1.23 is to ..?

    The multiple choice answers are
    1. 0.21 2. 0.43 3. 0.46 4. 0.63 5. 1.13 6. 1.23

now to me the correct answer should be 0.41 which is not an option, but according to this site it is B. 0.43
  10. Hey mate. I had my test and failed. One thing i could say, well two things is that they are easy questions but your against the clock so make sure you practice against it. Next thing is that i know when i go again that i make sure i get at least 10/15 right in each section (and you should be fine depends what job) so dont worry if you fail to answer all the questions just make sure you get the following 10/15 right, which i think would be a pass for warfare spec. One thing i failed like a fool is because i thought ooo quick look at the time i better rush and answer them all. If you do fail dont worry mate you know what to expect and will learn from it.

    Good luck,
