Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Firstly I am sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Now. I have a quick question about the recruitment purpose. I am doing GCSEs at the moment, doing a history exam latter this month, and I am thinking about joining the Royal Navy. I am not sure if I want to join as a Rating or as an Officer. If I was joining as an Officer I would like to go into Warfare but as a Rating I think the oceanographic specialist looks very interesting.

However the waiting list is 3 years at the moment. If I out my name down I would like to do GCSEs and A-Levels while I was waiting to join. My question is if I have 180+ UCAS points BEFORE I get a start date can I change my mind and join as an officer.

Thank you for reading, and once again I am sorry if this is the wrong section.

  2. You can apply to join as an officer. 180+ UCAS points does not guarantee that you will be successful.

You can apply to join as an Officer before you receive A Level results.

if you pass the Recruiting Test, medical Examination, Pre Joining Fitness Test, Sift Interview & Admiralty Interview board at a high enough level, you will be offered a provisional entry date as a Warfare Officer - pending production of adequate A Level results.

If you make a hash of joining as a Warfare Officer, you can then switch to Warfare Specialist.

    Speak to your AFCO.

  4. Thank you for the replies.

So if I am on the waiting list to join as a rating, and subsequently get the UCAS points, can I then apply as an Officer or would I still have to join as a rating?

If you apply before commencing A Levels, you can only apply as a Rating.

If you commence A Levels and your predicted grades, together with your GCSE results (Minimum 5 GCSE's A*-C including maths & English) are adequate you may be academically eligible to apply for Officer whilst having a current application for Rating - if you have scored high enough in the Recruiting Test.

  6. Not sure you read the reply from Ninja Stoker, but you can apply now for Officer, be selected and given a provisional entry date pending your A level results or yes you could apply for rating and potentially change over later.

If you want the officer entry then go down that route first
