Reassurance / Not your regular 9-5 job

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

  1. Hello,

Sorry if this is a daft question - I poked around the forums and can't seem to find the information I'm looking for and a couple of quick searches didn't do it for me either.

I'm in the process of re-applying as an Officer after passing AIB but failing to be selected (20th on the selection list, bit gutting, really). I'm looking to reassure my girlfriend that if I do get selected this time I won't be suddenly gone forever and we will be able to see each other. She seems to think that I'd float off somewhere and never be seen again. I doubt this is true but I don't have any concrete information to give her. I understand that the training will be pretty full-on, especially the initial 30 weeks, but I was wondering what kind of working pattern I might expect, given that this isn't your regular 9-5 job. My question is a two-parter:

    * What kind of time off will I get during INT(O)? Will it be the odd day off here and there or is it structured - weekdays training and weekends off, for instance.
    * One I've completed professional training, what sort of working pattern could I expect?

I imagine it would depend on what job I'd be on at any particular time, but I was looking for a typical example, if there is such a thing.

If it helps, I'm applying as a Warfare Officer with a possibility of specialising after professional training as a Fighter Controller.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike
