this may be a silly question but i wanted to be an officer for the longest time however I just did not get the grades required throughout school and college to go to university.

I have a joining date in may 2017 and am wondering once i am in and I have done a couple of years if I was to do a degree is there a way to progress to officer quicker or would I have to go the normal route of getting promoted one rank at a time did not know the processes in place as I will be 25 by the time I pass out I obviously want to go as far as possible.....which may not be very far at all but I just want to get as much information as possible ! I will be going in as a aircraft handler if this helps.

I'm sure others will fill you in on the Upper Yardman scheme which is how the Navy promotes its ratings to officers, but my initial question is why do you want to be an officer? And what particular branch (as some have age restrictions)?

There are plenty of opportunities to progress and learn management skills in the rating cadre - the ultimate accolade being promotion to Warrant Officer. I wouldn't get too hung up on whether being an officer is 'the best' or that it may not be 'what it seems' (although you haven't said what you think it would be like!) - your career is about finding out what suits you and should be about what you enjoy. If becoming an officer is included in that, then good for you, but please don't assume that anything else can't be considered aspirational. Good luck regardless!

To become an Officer over the age of 25 without a degree, from within the service, you need a recommend from your Reporting Officer and a minimum of 4 GCSE's, graded A*-C, including maths and English in order to be put forward to undertake AIB.

A degree is not necessary. Warfare & Aircrew Officer is not likely to be a viable option due to age, Engineering Officer is unlikely unless you are exceptional and gain rapid advancement (promotion) from the outset as those without a degree tend to be Senior Rates. The most likely potential future Officer career avenue is Logistics Officer, given your age & academic attainment to date...snag is, because Logs Officer applicants are accepted from the groups with the widest entry parameters (medical, age & academic) it significantly raises the bar with regard the standard achieved at AIB meeting the selection bracket, simply because the talent pool is particularly deep.

If you to not try you will never know, if you can make the grade and get the recommends then go for it, and good look
