Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. If I get on Jungly Lynxes, what are the chances of being with the marines? Could I then do my commando training and get a green beret? If after I've done my minimum service could I transfer to the Marines or would I have to leave and re apply?

You "could" do your All Arms Course but very few aircrew do, they are too expensive an asset to break.

As for your second question, thats a rarer circumstance than people landing on the moon. I know plenty of Marines who left and became Naval aircrew, or remained and became Marine Aircrew but I know of none who have reverted to a GD Marine Officer. Major "waste" of a hugely expensive training regime.

    Concur entirely with W-D.

The problem is that the average aspiring Officer will go to the Officer jobs 'supermarket' & try to cherry-pick whatever the individual perceives as the "best jobs" & lump them all together to become something like a special forces commando pilot 7th dan mountain leader.

When you stop & think about it, whereas Star Trek may send their Commanding Officer, Second in Command, Engineering Officer & Medical Officer on a jaunt to a frontline combat zone, there's one or two Command, Control & Communication issues in this folly & in the real world, we prefer to train individual specialists to do specific jobs.

If you want to be a Commando over everything, then join the Marines. If you want to be a pilot, join the Navy.

To my knowledge there have been a grand total of two RM Commando Officers who got as far as becoming fast jet pilots, however it's probably the hardest possible way imaginable to achieve that goal.

PS: Whatever happened to the Wolverhampton Wanderers Avatar?
  4. Splendid analogy :D

I forgot to add sniper to the job-spec.

"Call of Doody 4" has a lot to answer for.
  6. Sorry I didn't make it clear, I meant as an AET not a pilot, and the wolves avatar has been well documented, I find this quite funny, it is not an attempt to hide, I am a wolves fan.
  7. Steven Seagal Squadron
  8. Surely you would need a catering hygiene certificate to be in the Steven Seagal Squadron?

Ditto with regard the amusement, we all know Wycombe is an anagram of Wolverhampton.

    Sort of.
  12. When did I suggest it was an anagram :S it's merely me taking the mick out of the people who said 'he's gonna try and hide now' 'they'll recognise his accent'.
