Qualifications, Upper Yardsman

SW21

Newbie
Hi All,

I’m joining as a WS early next year, very happy to be going in as a rating.

I have a BTEC level 3 in management, post graduate qualification in Music Production however never did A Levels or University.

Reading online, apparently quite a few ratings make it on to officers.

What are the desirable things that they look for in candidates and is there an opportunity after or during Raleigh to be picked up, or is it only a 2/3 year process involving your CO.

There are now around 1/3 of the Officer cadre that have joined from the ranks. There is a lot to bring to party from those that have experience within their own specialisation and this can be transferred into the Officer role.

There are rules and regs (naturally) for these things and it is something that would be worth bringing up with your DO when you join your first ship. I would concentrate passing RAL/Phase 2 and the additional qualifications in your first sea going assignment. Once at sea, demonstrate spare capacity by completing your task books and becoming OPS.

Having qualifications doesn’t automatically mean you will get extracted. Neither does not having any, mean you will be excluded. Each candidate will be assessed on their own merits.

Have a google search for 'Royal Navy BR3' and go to chapter 50. That'll give you the run down for age, educational requirements etc.

Good catch Zoidberg The age limit may apply here. Therefore only leaving the SUY route open.

I’m actually 30, will still be that age when I join.

Didn’t realise there was an upper age limit, are either of you aware of any people who were put through anyway?

Unfortunately following the demise of the Victualling subsection of the S&S department in the 1970s the ability to Fiddle is no longer a requirement.

Only the old and bold will understand this. However it may be good for you to study this section of Navy History :)

Excuse me shippers - but there are still PO and CPO CAs left in the mob (albeit only a couple) and as an SA that was given a couple of CA postings what is this 'fiddle' you refer to

i will have you know that anything 'fiddled' was to the advantage of my shipmates (or the missus in MQs after being trooped and not getting paid (disgraceful now stoppage of pay so the wife and kids sufferd too)

especially when I was CA on a Type 14 down the after stokers mess in roughers (if you closed the upper deck you could only reach the engine room) cos I had the key for the dry store below the mess

Then of course as the only S&S SR on the Bulddog I was POSA/POCA/POCK/POSTD/POWTR annnnnnnndd Canteen Manager with Johhno my mate the PO Gunner (ex Ardent) when violin elbow may have been incurred ;)

@slim - Do you gave any advisory material that I should read or watch?
It was only a joke buddy. What happened in the 70s was so here is a bit of history.
The RN had a branch known as the Victualling branch which was part of the Stores branch
The Victualling branch used to procure ALL the food that the RN bought then the chefs would cook it.
However in the 70s it was found that some members of the branch were on the fiddle.
They were taking back handers from some of the suppliers and often allowing inferior products to be supplied.
A large number of court martials happened which lead to the dismissal from service of many both from the officer corp and senior rates.
Victualling branch was basically finished and a newly named branch formed.
This branch was renamed Catering
Further bit of history. The S&S branch have always been known as the "White Mafia" I believe this was from the days when officers wore coloured ribbon between their gold braid but I may be mistaken.
Best of luck with your RN career

I think it may have been before your time Dusty :)
I know that a chief at Lossiemouth certainly lost everything. I don't think it mattered though as his restaurant in Lossiemouth was doing very well :)

Yeah there is and I believe the warfare branch tops out at 30 for UY, but this will be in the BR3 Ch50. There's the option to apply for senior upper yardman, but you'll have to be a PO/CPO dependent on the branch.

I can't recall anyone having an age waiver approved; have you considered getting some A levels and trying to apply as a civvy? It's a hell of a lot easier than from inside the RN to get to go ahead for AIB.
