Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Does anybody know any information on the contents of the letter that is normally written to your CO requesting the permission to stripe up?

    Thanks in advance,

  2. When you say 'stripe up' are you referring to being awarded a good conduct badge i.e. a stripe?
  3. Apologies for the confusion, I meant striping up as in promotion of rank, sub-lieutenant to lieutenant.

  4. I Thought the same as Polto, I don't recall writing a snivelling creepy letter to get rated. :D

I would have done though it was £5.00 a week more then.
  5. Stripes/Rings/Badges

For those looking in who might be a tad confused:

Rating's Good Conduct Badges - 'Badges' or 'Stripes' to the Lower Deck, but 'GCBs' or 'Badges' to the Wardroom.

Officer's Gold Lace - 'Rings' to the Lower Deck, but 'Stripes' to the Wardroom.

Unless it has all changed recently...... 8O
  6. Hard work.....Grafting or digging out to the lower deck
Amusing to watch....for the ward room. :D

Formal Letter - of course they have gone but in essence

All hand written in best ink.

Left side top your address (in full)

    Right side
    Commanding Officer
BFPO xxx (after this tab across to get the date lined under your address - date in full 21 July 2010)

I have the honour to request your permission to "ship" my stripes to Lieutenant on promotion to date (promotion date).

I will be hosting drinks in the Wardroom (details) and ask if you can attend. I hope to see you there.

    I am,
    Your obedient Servent

    Sub Lieutenant Royal Navy

If you are wondering why I know this format so well it is because normally I have to write it as I have the honour to submit my reasons in writing.....

When did this start? Never heard of it.
  9. The dreaded "Reasons in writing...."

Always reminded me of the tale of Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit on the subject.

One of 'em "could read 'reading', but could not read 'writing' ".

Apparently with the other it was vice versa.
