It's Part of your PT'B test. you pass you don't have to do it again. You fail you have to pass you get so many warnings if you fail. Final one being pass or get on train home.
Its done to a beep rather than just smashing them out. My advice would be to try and make a conscious effort to count to two at the top and bottom of each press up.
Oh just to add you do it in pairs one lies on the ground face down arm extended and hand it a fist. Your chest should touch your oppos fist every rep and if it doesn't they shouldn't be counted. So make sure your practicing good reps getting nice and low.
I couldn't tell you what week its a good while since I was in phase 1.
