    The Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan earlier today in the margins of the NATO summit in Warsaw.

    The Prime Minister expressed his sincere condolences over the loss of life in the recent terrorist attack at Istanbul airport.

    They agreed that such attacks underlined the importance of close security co-operation, with the Prime Minister reaffirming his commitment to ensuring the strongest possible bilateral co-operation on counter-terrorism. They also agreed on the priority we must continue to give to efforts to defeat Daesh and end the conflict in Syria.

    They agreed the bilateral relationship was already strong in many respects, including on trade, worth $16 billion annually to our economies, and on working to promote stability across the Middle East.

    They agreed that it would be important to continue to build the UK-Turkey bilateral relationship as the UK left the EU, when it would be more important than ever to try to ensure that the European Union remained outward-facing and as close as possible to its neighbours.
