Portsmouth News: "Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Prince Of Wales To Carry Out Investigation After Flooding Onboard"

"An investigation is under way after an accommodation area onboard the Royal Navy’s newest aircraft carrier flooded with water raining down from the ceiling.

A video posted on Facebook page Jackspeak shows water up to ankle height in a room on the HMS Prince of Wales with streams of water gushing between the tiles in the ceiling.

The Royal Navy has confirmed the footage and that an investigation into what caused the flooding on Friday is now under way.

The water has been cleared and made no lasting damage to the £3.1bn warship, which is alongside at Portsmouth Naval Base.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: ‘Following a minor issue with an internal system on HMS Prince of Wales the ship’s company were required to remove a small volume of water from the ship.

‘An investigation into the cause is now under way, but this will not affect the ship’s programme.’

Last month homeowners in Gosport complained of sleepless nights due to the ‘incessant’ whirring drone of the HMS Prince of Wales’s diesel generators.

Ordinarily the vessel would be hooked up to a land-based power supply 24/7, however, the navy is carrying out trials with a new power plant which means the ship occasionally relies on her own generators to keep the lights on.

Yesterday sister ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth left Stokes Bay without the usual well-wishes from residents, with those gathering to watch its departure practising social distancing along the shoreline in Gosport.

The £3.1bn ship will sail along the south coast to undertake simulated battle training, as well as preparations in the event of a flood or fire onboard.

HMS Queen Elizabeth and its 700 crew members had been anchored in the Solent since Thursday, May 7."

I’ve got some interesting videos of the said flood. As a WSQ, the immediate actions are lacking.

If it is the system that I suspect it is everyone in that area should know where to isolate it. The isolation valves are all in an easily accessible location and are marked.

The writing on Defence matters in the News has fallen in quality over the last few years. I think that there used to be a good writer there on Defence but that he moved on.

Firstly, I didn't have anything to do with the new carriers. However, a LOT of stuff was carried forward from the T45 Project, of which I did have a small part. So I know that all the T45 accommodation came in huge blocks and was quite literally just pushed into the hull and water and electrics connected, et viola, as they say.

So it may just be that there is a bit of horse-hair and/or Plumber's Mate missing from one of the water connections.......

I recall when I was on the Iron Duck during a refit, they had stripped out the MTLS flood pipework to replace with new.

Fast forward to SARC 2 and them testing the flood sprays and alarms, they pressurised the system to check for leaks. 4.5 bar of water shooting into the magazine (thankfully no stingray in there). They chased the pipework back and there was a whole section of pipe missing, save a bit of writing on the bulkhead stating:

‘Sod this, it’s the weekend and I don’t get paid enough. I’m off down the pub.’

The ships investigation was interesting.

Last month homeowners in Gosport complained of sleepless nights due to the ‘incessant’ whirring drone of the HMS Prince of Wales’s diesel generators.

I wonder what other complaints there is?

Blocks out the early morning sunrise, wrong shade of pussers grey, eyesore causing an decrease in area house prices. Some people are never happy.

I can remember the Portsmouth News reporting a complaint about the noise of gliders at the then HMS Daedalus at Lee-on-Solent.........

Seriously. The lady concerned grumbled about the whishing sound the gliders made as they passed over her house alongside the airfield to land.

So she bought a house alongside an airfield? That's not the point!
