Budget cut victim sails into harbour
Pompey News 2 May 2010 said:
HER arrival was not publicised and there was little fanfare for HMS Roebuck as she passed the Round Tower under sober skies. She is the latest victim of the budget cuts facing the Ministry of Defence, and that means she will end her days early in Portsmouth...
At least the minehunter HMS Walney, also due to be decommissioned prematurely this year, is going out with a bang (see second entry for 30 Apr 10 on the MCDOA website's 'Latest News' page):

"But the MoD have admitted that without Roebuck the capability of the navy has suffered."

Unfortunately you could take out the word "Roebuck" from that sentence and put in a hundred and one other things, someone somewhere is taking a huge risk on the future defence and military commitments of the UK.

Well, according to the plan we're either going to be the 51st state or part of the autonomous continental union anyway so may as well remove as many of the variable-enablers as can at the moment. :D

My one foray into the world of surveying was as the Killick Writer on the Roebuck.

She was a great ship. I had many good times on her and I for one, will be immensely sad to see her go.

Happy days
