HGV drivers must work longer hours to fix the Brexit problems we created, insists government

grant-shapps-transport-secretary-small.jpg

The post-Brexit shortage of HGV drivers can be solved by putting over-worked and tired drivers behind the wheel of a 40-tonne vehicle for longer than was previously claimed as safe, according to the government today.

As hauliers insist that there is a shortage of drivers caused in part by European drivers ‘going back home’ after Brexit, pro-Brexit ministers such as Grant Shapps have insisted the issue can easily be fixed by making the existing HGV drivers work just a little bit harder.

“So yes, the nation’s roads will have some drivers in massive trucks who have been driving for longer than we previously said was safe; but on the plus side, this is another Brexit problem we can claim to have completely solved and can therefore dismiss it as Project Fear.

A bit economic with the actuality there though I get it that Newsthump is trying to be funny. The real villain of the peace is Covid. It is true some drivers did go home to Europe but mainly because they wanted to be with their families when the virus struck. They have since found that other countries in Europe have a shortage of drivers so have found work closer to home. Meanwhile back in the UK 30,000 would be truck drivers didn't get their driving test because of Covid restrictions and at the other end of the scale drivers retired or left the business completely. I expect Brexit contributed to the shortage but is was way down the scale as a cause of the current problems but don't let the truth spoil a good dit.

The likes of Shapps and other out of touch MPs need to wake up and realise that drivers don't want that extra hour's work foisted on them plain and simply because if they drove the extra hour 2 years ago they faced a massive fine and/or loss of licence. Therefore it is not ok to do it now.
Where did this figure of 30,000 drivers who missed out taking their tests because of Covid come from? Total bollocks, I very much doubt that there were that many people out there willing to part with several thousand pounds of their own money to do the course, take the test and then be shit on by all and sundry for the rest of their working lives. Parliament need to make the job a damned sight more attractive with better facilities such as dedicated truckstops with decent inexpensive facilities for truck drivers only, not shared by caravanners, coach parties and gypos.
Professional bodies such as R.H.A. (Road Haulage Association) and the drivers unions have been telling various Ministers of Transport for over 30 years that a driver shortage was coming because of the poor working conditions drivers face every day but their advice has always fallen on deaf ears. Well now it's here and good oh says I. Perhaps now Government, Local Authorities and the general public will finally start to value and respect truck drivers, the backbone of this nation.

Anyway, back to the piss-taking.

The Spanish national anthem, the Marcha Real, is one of only four in the world that has no lyrics, along with those of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and San Marino, despite also being one of the oldest in existence with the first record of the Royal March being used dated to 1761.
