The late , great Tommy Cooper had a gate just like that on stage , always using it going back and forth ensuring the latch was shut . He never said a word for about ten minutes but he had the whole place in stiches visiting the bag full of tricks he had left on the table the other side of the gate.

I sometimes think Cooper was such a comedy genius his thought processes were so bizarre that he was acting subconsciously and even baffled himself.

Probably why he could never make it as an actor in comedy films , always looked awkward but safe in his own skin.
