Physical Training Officers

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Can anyone tell me what's happening with the Physical Training Officer Branch ? There seems to be an influx of Officers from other branches acting as the PT Officer in Establishment gymnasiums. When in the past you had those who made their way through the PT Branch who brought the relevant experience with them.

  2. As far as I'm aware, the PTRO branch no longer exists. PT Officers tend to be WOPTIs or officers from other specialisations are appointed to that job.

At the moment, I don't know of any PT Officers who are PTRO branch.

  3. Yes, I believe that Officers from other specialisations heading up Pusser's gyms is only a recent development. Although WOPTs have been undertaking this task for a number of years in certain establishments.

The PT Officer ceased to exist about 4 years ago (IIRC), I think it was a case that there weren't enough jobs to justify the Officer branch structure anymore and it was deemed unviable. Didn't help that a lot of newly qualified SUY PT Officers were sent to OOW jobs from which they walked.

The RAF have a PT Officer Branch that has direct recruitment from graduates. I think they only take in 2-3 a year. Their jobs are widly different to the RN jobs. I think its generally 1st job running a gym, then the chance of an MSc (2-3 types), para training, physio training, recruit training etc.

  5. Seems as if the RAF have a sensible approach but then again they seem to do things much better for their people.

However, the RN method just seems to go from bad to worse. At least when there were SUY PTs running RN gyms they knew what they were talking about. Now you have Officers coming off warships/submarines into a completely alien environment, struggling with basic concepts.

  6. It's terrible to think that the guys running the Gym's shoreside might actually have some experience of life at sea or on ops. ^_^;

  7. Clanky, done a bit of sea time have we ?

  8. Enough.

It's that old chestnut that you don't need to be a Doctor to manage a hospital etc., etc.

  10. Yes, there are no more PTRO's. Those that were in the branch now hold some of the most bizarre positions in the fleet.

One being Staff Officer (Sea Scouts). Another current one is possibly the only PTRO that has gone on to command a ship - any guesses which one?

  11. HMS BRISTOL ?

Yep Flag Officer Sea Sprouts - helluva fulltime job for a two & a half!

I almost find myself siding with Norm on that one. [IMG]
