Do the years of service count toward civvy pension? i.e If I serve less than the time required for RN pension, do those years count toward state pension given that I will have been paying scandalous tax rates on my earnings?

Yes - all work where you pay National Insurance is counted. It is the amount of NI stamps that determines how much state pension you get.

If you have missed some stamps, you can buy extra to make up enough to get your full entitled state pension.

If you're getting within 10 years to pension you should ask for a projection and then you will know if you need to buy any.
