As an MP he is in the fortunate position of being able to write directly to the Gp Capt. If anyone else on that flight wanted to raise objections, they would have to go through the chain of command and would presumably be told it was 'life in a blue suit' (or other service equivalent) and the issue would never get to the top.

Our lads & lasses deserve not to have their R&R and time with families eaten into because the people we task with transporting them couldn't organise a p*ss-up in a brewery. Of course we need to give them the right equipment, but this sounds like personal incompetence rather than lack of decent kit, although planes with working windows would be my preference any day over those without!

Those who suggested that as he is a reservist he doesn't count should tell that to the taleban. Please ignore this rant if it doesn't apply to you, as I know only a small minority still hold this sort of prejudice, but any regular who seriously believes that the forces could function in the present climate without the reserves just doesn't understand the modern defence environment.

A serious question that is raised in all this, other than wtf are the crabs doing, is who fights our corner in Parliament? The Forces are a virtual consituency with our own issues, but who represents us? Is it the Secretary of State for Defence? His Ministers? I think not.

Should we have an MP for the forces?

In fairness to the bloke his intention was to write a private letter to ask for answers regarding an unacceptable situation. Yes he is an MP and has the ability to raise it quickly to a level which we could not but in doing so he is doing us all a favour.

I agree with absolutely everything he said as I had a similar experience last time I travelled home with the RAF and the pathetic Civ Air Contract Firm. It took 3.5 days to do what should have taken just over one. I would have written a complaint had I found out who to write to.

It is interesting to note that he never intended for his letter to become public in this manner so his "whinging" would have been entirely private and remained so if he had received a satisfactory solution. One of the big fixes needed and agreed by all except those who hold the purse strings is to get additional air frames (plural) into each theatre. At least this would enable the RAF to have a plan B - which they do not have at this time.

The Forces (and Oxbridge) used to have seperate MPs but that was done away with decades ago. What you do have are the All Party Groups in Parliament. There is one for the: Army (link), RAF (link), Reserves (link), RN (link), RM (link) and even the Sea Cadets (link). These are the people you need to target if you are doing any concerted campaign. Their details are published in Vachers Parliamentary Companion (published quarterly), Members' personal subject interests are published in Dod's Parliamentary Companion, both of which should be available from the Reference Section of any good Public Library (ask the Reference Librarian)and the All Party Groups are also listed online via Parliament's website, which is full of useful information.

Referring to the RAF and its useful role

Have you seen the manning numbers - they have more people in the RAF
than in the Navy .
I suppose they need more to do shiftwork
