Operation Orion - or not as the case may be

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Well, as Operation Orion was meant to show resolve and our willingness to stand up to Ahmadinnerjacket in the Gulf…

What message has the on-off-on-off nature of the deployment sent him?
  2. Err..

Firstly, it was never an Op.

Secondly, it never had anything to do with showing our willingness to "stand up to" Iran. It is about maintaining CS and other capabilities through exercises with allies.

Mind you, I agree it has been a bit of a faff getting off the blocks- not too impressive.
  3. Bradt sums it up quite well. I'm sure it's not so much a measure of resolve but more the results of mounting an exercise on a ridiculously tight budget.

  4. MoD says it is…

"The idea is to demonstrate our commitment to maritime security in a strategically very important part of the world."

Now them what runs these things can try and spin it anyway they want now about this not being anything to do with Iran, but we are a frigging laughing stock courtesy of Fridgegate.
  5. Note that the Orion news item in Oil Slick's first link above was dated 29 Apr 2007. The 2008 Orion is just another deployment in the same series.
  6. Naval_Gazer is quite right. This deployment is a completely different MCM deployment, just confusingly given the same name.
