Open/Acquaint Days

Hi guys,

I'm looking into possibly making a big career move and applying to the RFA as a seaman apprentice.

I'm not having much luck with the careers hotline - information is very sparse.

I was wondering if anybody knew of any upcoming 'open days' or careers events (if the RFA does such a thing) that I could pop along to?

I'm aware that it's a small organisation that only recruits limited numbers per year. What's a realistic timeframe for joining currently? (Providing each part is passed/goes without major hiccups) I'm aware this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question... but it would be useful to have a rough guide... 6 months... a year... 18 months?

Unfortunately the hotline can only give you the info they have, there is an RFA officer within Naval Recruitment, if you ask nicely, it might be possible for the hotline to give you their direct contact details.

On the other side, there is a wealth of information on these forums have a read and if your question is not answered post a new one.

As for the piece of string, the answer really is, it depends, the recruiter should have an idea of how many candidates we need in the next year. But even they cannot say how quickly you can pass the tests at the AFCO, how quickly your paperwork will be processed, how soon they can interview you (depends on how many other applicants there) and how long the Defence Vetting Agency will take to grant you security clearance etc. Even with all that there is a limit to the size of each intake at Raleigh. Sorry but its just not possible to give a precise timeline on these forums, for everyone it is different.

I join the RFA as a Seaman App in April. I began the process April '16 submitting the online application. The RT arranged with a couple of weeks and was carried out at my local Armed Forces Careers office. Results were with me within a week.
I then waited for the application to go through the desktop sift. When you submit your application ensure you put as much additional info on your reasons why you want to join in the free text boxes. I even submitted a covering letter as there appeared to be a character count. This is what highlights your application above the others.
I was informed at the end of May that I had got through to an interview in mid July. Following the interview I was sent a provisional offer with 6 days. It theN took me 4 months to get my injections, Eng1 medical and security clearance.
I received my contract and starting date in November. As Random said, it does depend on where your application sits within their own recruitment timescale. I think I was lucky in that it was in just before the sift as these can be few and far between.
I hope this is of use but there are stories of people taking 18 months +. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait time though. I can't wait to get started.

Thanks for that Klanky. I submitted the application on Saturday morning. I could only spot one extra text box at the bottom of the qualifications and employment section. I wrote a couple of paragraphs about some outdoors and adventurous hobbies I have, the qualifications I've gained from it and how I felt it related to an RFA career - a love of working to overcome obstacles in challenging environments as part of a team.

Feeling it may be a little lacking now. How did you go about submitting a covering letter? Via email direct to the recruitment team?

I sent it to the recruitment email address with the application reference number quoted in the title to confirm who I was. I stated it was supplementary evidence to support my application. It wouldn't hurt to send in some additional info.
