Ol' Spithead sadly lost his ship. That is tragic but reflects not favourably or unfavourably on Ol' Spithead.
He had a colourful life and is now a Socialist sailor. That is rare.

That you do not like to be reminded is a problem for you. There was and never has been much glory in a Captain losing his ship to enemy action. It's not what they are expected to do.

If that is the best you can come up with then my point has been well made. Captains are not expected to lose their ships to enemy action. That is not the idea.

I have read. It still doesn't alter the fact that whatever the reason there is little honour in losing ones ship. Make of it what you will. Given they were poor warships then Captains should have made that clear to the armchair Admirals when they took command of them. If the warships were that poor they should never have been sent. If they were the best we had Well!

Here's an idea Lanky/Norman/Cock, why don't you see if you can get the likes of HMS Belfast and other museum ships recommissioned. As an Ex 2 1/2 of the day I am sure they would welcome you to be promoted Cdr. You could then steam line astern over to the Black Sea and give the Russians a jolly good thrashing.

On the type 21s, yes they had their faults but do you seriously expect that a serving officer or rating would disobey a direct order to sail into harms way? I am sure that they were all aware of the dangers but rather than throw a hissy fit, they got on with the extremely difficult job at hand.

Your disdain for todays Royal Navy is uncalled for. We all remember our times with mainly fondness through rose tinted glasses. However the RN of today is a lean, perhaps too lean efficient fighting force. Gone are the days of old and bitter stood over 2 1/2s building an empire doing sweet FA. If you do think so little of the RN then perhaps choose a different site to spout your bile.

Then pray quote them for me. Nothing despicable as you suggest, If that should happen to any captain then that is a matter of regret notwithstanding the situation unless of course it is a direct dereliction of duty but then they are nevertheless shipped off with a handsome pension. It has been ever thus
