Officer entry, bad A levels but have a foundation degree

I am hoping to join the royal navy as an officer and I require 180 UCAS points. Unfortunately my A levels are awful as I was concentrating on keeping my dads business running whilst he was hospitalised with cancer at the time. I have great GCSEs and later did a foundation degree which I passed with a merit and is a higher qualification than A levels (dont think it counts towards UCAS points though). Which leaves me in a pickle. I have spoken to a recruiter but he knew nothing more than I do. Would they let me become an officer? Anyone know????

Unfortunately not, UCAS points are primarily used for university entry and as such anything above level 3 like my degree aren't counted. Degrees aren't even included on that calculator. So essentially I don't meet the requirement based on UCAS points but I hold qualifications above that level. I just want to know whether they'll accept that and still consider me for an officer entry.

Which subjects are your A Levels in and in which subject do you have a Foundation Degree, Radicalash?

I have A levels in geography (E) and business studies (D) and an AS in media studies (E). My foundation degree is travel and tourism management (merit).

What role are you interested in? Not being funny but your qualifications, apart from maybe geography or business studies, aren't a lot of use in the RN.

It is possible to become an Officer from within the Navy, Radicalash. That may be an option for you, join as a Rating and pursue the UY/SUY route.

Looking at your qualifications, I'm wondering whether this is a role which would appeal to you:

I want to be a pilot, I have a few hours flight experience and I have already passed entry tests and requirements for a place at CAE Oxford (really good flight school). I have also worked the ramp at Gatwick Airport for 5 years and have very good knowledge of aviation. What I don't have is a spare 100k to pay for training in the civvie world.

From what I have read online I would not be able to go from rating to pilot officer, it would most likely be observer which is OK but not what I really want.

Did you upset him Wrecks?

I'm long out of the education system and had nothing to do with current system, are D's and E's a pass?

Was the recruiter you spoke to one of the Royal Navy Careers Advisors who works in an AFCO?

Actually I think I did upset him. He wasn't happy I took all the people off the naughty step that Levers had put on there.

With GCSE's A-C is a pass but they've changed the scoring, it's now 9 - 4 where 9 is equivalent of A* and 4 the the basic pass. A bit like NAMET in reverse.

So does this mean that Radicalash doesn't really have any A levels that count. I'm not having a go just trying to make sense out of it. Back in the day if you didn't pass you didn't get the certificates.

Each grade at A Level is considered to be worth a number of points, Janner. Someone applying for Pilot who sat his/her A Levels before 2017 needs to offer 180 Points in total. Radicalash's A Level points add up to 60.

How the points are allocated is done using something called the UCAS Tariff.

A D or an E at A Level is considered a pass, Janner; the problem is that these grades attract low points and so it can be difficult for applicants who are asked to offer a minimum number of points.
