War Hero
CDP sets the strategy for developing a capable and motivated military and civilian workforce. The role was given even greater responsibility in last year’s SDSR, which pledged to enable our Armed Forces to work more flexibly, help more personnel live in private accommodation and buy their own homes, and develop a new joiner offer which both attracts the right recruits and better meets their expectations.

Major General Nugee was selected after an open competition. He will take up the role on promotion from his current role as Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Personnel and Training) and Defence Services Secretary. He has a long and distinguished Army career, serving on operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq, and was latterly chief of staff to the ISAF joint command in Kabul during the Afghanistan drawdown.

In his new role, Major General Nugee will oversee the development of a military offer that attracts, develops and retains military personnel from the most junior ranks to the most senior, and take responsibility for the ‘whole force’ - including 140,000 full time and 30,000 part time servicemen and women, 60,000 civil servants, about 200,000 military dependants, and around 2.8 million veterans.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

This is now one of the most important jobs in defence and Richard Nugee will bring expertise and experience to it. I’ve set him the challenge of driving forward our plans for more flexible employment, a better accommodation model and an offer that targets the skills we need most. Getting these right will be crucial to ensuring our Armed Forces continue to be the best.

Major General Nugee said:

I am delighted to be taking on this vitally important role at a time when there is so much still to do for the People in Defence. Our people, civilian and service personnel, are at the very heart of all we achieve and are critical to the success of defence. I look forward to the opportunity that this role gives to ensure that they are highly valued and respected both now and in the future.
