Newbie Saying hi

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hiya, just thought i'd say hello.

Am currently waiting for my refrences and security docs to be processed, then im waiting for my date to head of for phase one training at raleigh, which they say is around july 2010.

I have read multiple posts on here about the kit you should take, and a couple of people saying to take white markers, spare socks and underwear for kit musters, a good iron, etc, its all very good advise but at the same time, very confusing.

Could some of the people who have already 'passed-out', give some clarity as what are good things to take.

  2. What trade are you going in as? And when did you start your application process?

  3. Here we go again!

It's been a while since I was at Raleigh but I will give you my two cents worth none-the-less.

Make sure you take all the stuff on the kit list,
    Wear a suit,
If you don't have one, set up a bank account before you go as Lloyds are w*nk and they are the only bank on base,
Get the very best iron you can afford (no tesco value student shite),
If the list says speedos it fcuking means speedos not Hawaii surfing shorts,
Take a wire coat hanger to make a shower button clip (you will find out what this is when you get there),
If you smoke start quitting now, your opportunities for tabbing will be few and far between,

That's it, just do as you are told, don't gob off and stick with it. The real fun starts after phase 1, Raleigh is just the Navy's way of seeing if you are cool enough to be in the gang.

Thats an info overload 2 deck! Have you seen the old film scanners?
  5. hamisatypeofcheese , im going in as an AET, and i started my spplication back in april, took ages to get me into the psychometric tests, but once they were done i'd got all the other ones done in less than 3 weeks.

as i said, just waiting on other people now.

    old film 'scanners'?? :? lol
  6. Ah right, I'm also going in as an AET, restarted my application in October so I might have a really long wait ahead of me then lol
  7. I seriously wonder how people used to get through Raleigh before the Internet.

I remember turning up to Guz train station as bright eyed spotty 16 year old with the clothes on my back, a grip full of the items on the kit list, a letter from me mam and fcuk all else.

Do people still do this? Or is it a pre-requisite now to take as much extra shite as possible cos someone on the Internet told you to?

If you need it and it's not on the list, the Navy will issue it to you.
  8. WAFU from henceforth
  9. Im not wishing to start the old 'ball rolling' with arguments, just getting an idea and seeing if what others have said is suffice.

A friend of mine had 'passed out', and said about a spare pair of boots he picked up just for musters.
sounds a great idea, if there be room for it.

hamisatypeofcheese , how come you had to start your application again?
  10. :D I like being wet :thumbright:
  11. I didn't have to start it again, I paused my application just over a year ago after doing my RT becuase I needed a year to finish school and to be 4 years clear of asthma.

When did you sit your RT? Because that's when you get in the queue for Raleigh I think.
  12. early october, they said it was a 9 month wait for AET's.

I found the final interview nerve racking because i'd studied stuff i didn't need to. lol it went ok tho.

what recruiting office did you use, was it the portsmouth careers office?
  13. No, I'm down in Swansea and I've got my final interview on tuesday, can't wait to get on with it.
  14. yeah, do you know the trade well? My RO asked me questions about raleigh, about what ships i would serve on, and if you mention anythin about ARINC 429, they smile lol

Don't the recruiters for you lot tell you what you'll need? I'm sure when i joined as a Junior Leader that we got sent a kit list.
  16. Changed from my day as well Blackrat, got sent a kit list and told when to front up. Maybe it's defence cuts?

Or it could be the case of "Lets ask as many people as possible to see if what the recruiters are telling me is correct".

Advice to the Newbie (albeit from an Army stance). ASK THE RECRUITERS IF YOU ARE UNSURE!!

*turns to the right (pause of two, three), marches off hurrumphing*

    Good luck though fella.
  18. Sparky, we instructors know all the tricks that the "newbies" try to pull, like extra socks and knicks for kit musters and dont forget we read these boards as well
  19. lol, alrighty.

Im just trying to get an idea, im not trying to 'fool' the instructors, were there for a reason.

but just asking for opinions on what are 'good idea's', like the white markers, like a reel of sellotape, etc.

Porn. Stacks of it. And a t shirt that says "My instructor gives hand jobs for rum, bum & baccy". They'll see the funny side and go easy on you.
