Nervous to be joining my boat/unit

Bloejogs

Midshipman
Hi all, as the title says I’ve technically joined my boat but haven’t started BSS or BSQ yet as I’m on 103 course.

What is it like when you first join? I’m worried about getting qualified, generally adjusting to life as a sundodger. No being “liked” onboard, all the silly stuff but mostly just nerves. I’m a dabber (TSM) and heard I have a pretty miserable time, been selected for fast track to LH so extra work to do with BSQ.

Any insight and advice would be appreciated 👍🏼

It will be better than you are imagining I would think, it being 2023. Everyone in board will assist you in any way possible because you are part of the ships company and not just a passenger. Believe me, you'll be able to multi-task after a few months unless you simply give up and stop trying. With hard work and a sense of self worth comes respect and a massive boost to your own confidence. Submarine pay is for submariners. Only right you should prove your right to earn it.
Me? I did my first BSQ (Part 3 Task Book) in 1974 and try to imagine what it was like back then.
Good luck deeps.

Billy.

How mant dabbers on boats then?
Do you lose many when you dive?

Normal to be apprehensive when joining somewhere new, new tasks, new groups. Don't worry, crack on and be yourself you will soon fit in and get used to your new surroundings.

I always found that listening to what you are told and to what is going on around you for a while, helps you understand the flow of what is going on and what is expected of you, remember a golden SM rule, if you don't know ask, don't assume, if your asked to do something you don't know or are happy/confident doing then say so, there will some piss taking that is navy life, but if you take everything in good spirit and show a good work ethic you will do fine.

Good luck

People always try to paint a bleak picture of whatever trade you are. Go with the flow, don't worry about people's opinions, get on with your job, and you'll soon find out whether or not you like. Good luck.

And here's something to ponder, you being a future sun-dodger. Faslane, Scotland or Perth, Western Australia? It's coming.
Have a hard time dodging the UV down there.

(Edited to add stuff).

I would think that the boat tasked to be part of SRF(W) would not do that trip in one go either - so there's definitely the opportunity of parking up in a few places along the way!

Thanks to everyone for replying! I’ve been on course and forgot to check back here, I’ll be joining my boat very soon however haven’t been able to get down a boat to do BSS or even start BSQ will be joining her overseas (hope this isn’t breaking OPSEC or PERSEC, will remove if needed). Gonna feel very out of my depth and pressured to get qualified but reading these have somewhat calmed my nerves

Best wishes I was nervous about joining my first boat and I was a PO who'd been been in the mob for 12 years and had 3 previous sea drafts before mechs (Artificer) course, so there was a lot of pressure to get Pt3 done asap along with watchkeeping qualifications whilst getting used to a totally different way of life

Snap! With the additional 'snag' that one of the WE Tiffy specialisations had shorter courses than any of the rest, meaning that they could potentially get their buttons earlier. A DCI was issued, levelling the playing field. I enquired about this, went to table, got my buttons! Trouble was my No1 Sonar Bender was on leave and came back to find his No3 (or maybe 4) was now a Chief!
