Need Advice: Reserves to Regulars

Hello all,

I am currently in the RNR and have been for the past 6 months. I have not yet completed any of my phase 1 courses as they have all been cancelled due to coronavirus.

It was my aim to transfer/ apply to the regulars as soon as my phase 1 courses were done. However, by the time they are rearranged I will be looking at over a year to complete them.

I am considering just applying for the regulars now, that way I may be able to start sooner?

Would this be a good idea? If so what would be the best way to approach this?

I have asked my RNR UWO but they have not got back to me just yet. I think it may be a case of just starting from scratch with my AFCO.

My only worry is waiting times for HMS Raleigh.

Many thanks

Apply online pal, there’s some behind the scenes admin that needs to go on (release from your RNR unit etc). Or give your AFCO a ring on Monday.

Theres a huge backlog now.

I recently passed AIB beginning March with the hope to get May entry. May got cancelled. Now I’m facing double the competition in September and January.

As a result will either need to do AIB again or join reserves and transfer to regs.

My advice is to stay reserve then transfer. You’d be waiting until next year to start training anyway even if you passed one of the AIBs.

What job are you currently doing in real life?
If you are not currently employed/furloughed/whatever I would suggest you look at doing the RN ten week course at RAL, a loose handful of places are made available to the RNR on each course.

That way you would;
a) Get paid for seventy-odd days
b) On completion, be in a good place to request a transfer to RN
c) Not have to go through the AFCO hurdles again.

Thanks for the reply.

Im currently doing an apprenticeship, however I am due to finish a lot quicker than expected (within the next few months).

I have only been in the RNR a few months so I called the AFCO regarding a transfer and they said all of my tests, interview and medical etc is still in date, so I may have skipped a good chunk there.

I am just looking to go regular ASAP to be honest. Ive got the ball rolling with the AFCO anyway so will hopefully move along quicker.

Thanks for the advice

Yeah I've applied for Warfare specialist, hopefully the waiting times aren't too bad
It’s not! Have a think about a sub-spec, although you won’t be able to choose. You can give an idea, this paired with your RT score will give the allocators an idea.

Thanks, do you mean the waiting times for WS arent too bad? If so thats great!

I like the sound of AWW for the sub spec, but I've heard mixed things so I'll have more of a look at the others.

We are short in the WS branch. Wait times are always subject to so many variables. Your AFCO will always be the best POC for lead times.

I’ve commented on the branches before, if you have a look through my posts. Although sexy looking, it gets turbo cold on the upper scupper.

If you like the idea of tactical data links, RADAR, when in the ASW environment Target Motion Analysis. Look for AWT.

If you like the idea of intelligence and analysis of enemy RADAR emissions and anti-ship missile defence. Look for EW.

If you like hide and seek, then later on in your career being in charge of firefighting, damage control and chemical defence. Choose UW.

If you want to spend 5% of your day doing actual weapons and Rambo stuff. The other 95% doing the AWT/gloom room stuff, like the rest of us. Go for AWW.

The choice is yours, you could end up doing it for a long time. So do your research.

Hope this helps.

I’m a UW btw.

damage control has very little to do with UWs - finding, hunting and destroying submarines has a lot to do with UW.
I beg to differ. As a UW SR, I spent 90% of my work day doing CBRNDC and the rest was ASW. Thankfully, we are starting to re-invest in ASW training. Therefore taking it more seriously.

You’ll note I said later on in your career, being in charge of CBRNDC.

Thats great, thanks for the advice.

I'll ask my afco for more info on wait times, but would you by any chance know a rough ball park time that can be expected? I know it can depend on many things especially at the minute.

Thanks again.

I’ll defer to the AFCO I’m afraid. Your set of circumstance are fairly unique in that you’re RNR.
