Navy News: "Dram-atic End for HMS Sceptre"

#4
Dear all,

I'm co-ordinating the whisky for the boat and we've got loads left for anyone who wants some. I can't get access to the link above, as we're at sea at the minute. I'm putting the press release below and the 'standard response' to enquiries below. Obviously we don't have access to t'internet with any regularity at the minute so I can't respond to any queries via this forum, but we will be returning to the UK this summer and the whisky will be disted immediately afterwards. (OPSEC!)

Have a Dram with the Last of the Class
To celebrate and commemorate the decommissioning of the last of the Swiftsure Class submarines, HMS Sceptre’s Ship’s Company have commissioned a numbered limited edition run of 500 bottles of 10 Year Old Highland Single Malt from local whisky specialists, Clyde Whiskies.
Commanding Officer, Cdr Steve Waller said, “With the passing of SCEPTRE, ends an era. For over 30 years the Swiftsure Class submarines have been undertaking all manner of operations for the Royal Navy and the UK as a whole. They are a proud class of Nuclear Submarines and are worthy of this fitting memento.â€
Of course, the whisky has a second purpose. Decommissioning Officer, Lt Mike Hitchings said, “We want to be able to give the boat, indeed the whole class, the send off they deserve, and in order to do that we need to raise money to fund all events we’re planning. The Decommissioning Fund will make a small profit on each bottle sold.â€
The label, designed by Duncan Reid at Clyde Whiskies, features the Code Phrase “Dolphin 100â€. WO2 Justin Beattie, who is organising the whisky said, “The Dolphin Code was an old-school way of submarine COs communicating with each other – I particularly like Dolphin 52D. Feel free to Google the code – there are various versions, but none for the easily offended!â€
Fred Flint of Clyde Whiskies said,â€It’s been an honour to be able to help HMS Sceptre celebrate her decommissioning with this whisky. Having been a submariner all my career and left as a WO Cox’n I want to do all I can to make this a special occasion for the boat.â€
Any readers who would like a bottle (or more) of this never-to-be-available-again whisky should email [email protected] with the subject line ‘Decommissioning Whisky’ to reserve theirs. Bottles will cost £35 each and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Many thanks for your request to reserve a bottle of HMS Sceptre’s Decommissioning whisky. I’m happy to reserve you a bottle, but I must point out that due to a typo, some of the press releases announced it as a 12yo (which was the original intention). Unfortunately due to changes in VAT rates and supply chain price increases, we were forced to decide between putting the price up or reducing the value of the whisky. Please note that there is no limit on the number of bottles per order.

HMS Sceptre’s Decommissioning Whisky is now a 10yo Single Highland Malt, available for £35 per bottle (+£5 p&p if required). Collection will be available in the Helensburgh area only.

If you are still interested, please let me know with a delivery address. Please email your response to [email protected] rather than clicking ‘REPLY’. Payment is accepted as cheque only payable to ‘HMS Sceptre Central Fund’ and is to be posted to

The whisky will be made available shortly after our return to the UK.

Many thanks,
