'My best run ashore'

Best move for you still serving lads when on a UK or or fact a visit to any Port is to invite the local Police on board for a look-see and drinks. Then challenge them to football/hockey/basketball etc match. mixed teams are excellent as both Police and Skimmers are now well populated with the fairer sex.

The rest of the visit will go easy as any probs will get dumped at the end of the gangway and not in court. The way will be smoothed in many other areas.

How do I know? Cos I have sat on both sides of the fence.

I'll be living in Canada at that time, Nutty, and I think I'll be enjoying the Summer and probably hosting family members - my future trips to UK will more likely be in Winter, as an escape.

I would agree absolutely, doing liason officer duties for a visit to Hull sorted everything out with the senior police office during a lock in at the merchant seamens hostel.

It can backfire a bit sometimes though when on another visit to Newport out Canadian exchange officer literally borrowed the CID car being used by our escorts the duty CID team to take his latest conquest back to the hotel. Relations with the police were a trifle strained for a while, espicially as the wardroom car was nicked the same night and the skipper believed it was a tit for tat by the police.

I was about to post something along very similar lines Geoff. Small ships or Boats any none Pusser Port. I don't remember ever having a bad run in the UK.
Went to Oz in the Oberon and ended up sleeping in a bunk house on a Sheep Station near the village of Oberon in the Blue Mountains. Our host was 80 years young, still a Pom, who insisted on driving us out on the p.iss every night, the only problem being that He insisted on throwing the pub doors open and shouting something like "Move over you Aussie Barstewards the Poms are here." Luckily they saw the funny side of it.

Lovely dit Jan made my smile

Agree with UncleAlbert, Newcastle....Time spent in the FP squad led to some cracking runs in UK and Northern European ports (the smaller ports where the 'larger' warships didn't get to go)

"

I hate to have to agree with Uncle Albert but Newcastle by far the best run in the UK and possibly in the world.

It it has to be foreign then Detroit, Texas Bar in Lisbon or HK in the Empire Days.

My first 'foreign' run was South Shields and it was 'interesting' rather than 'great'. Most Uk ports were good, but I think Hull has to be one of the top ones with Dundee close behind. Derry was good too before the troubles started. Overseas had a good time everywhere, and I would agree with the comment runs were what you made them, rather than being made by the place itself.

best in UK, smoke, best in world, when we took over the "snack bar" on the yank base in Olongapo, 24 hour drinking and a lift back to the ship at 0700! knew the yanks were good for something!!

UK: Newcastle, Bristol, Newport, Hove, Sheffield, Hull (in no particular order)!

Foreign: All of them. Never had a bad run. Although, in the 70's while on the Sheffield, a Killick Seaman was knocked over and killed either in Sweden, or Germany. So that put a bit of a mocker on that particular visit.
Montevideo. In the mid-80's Where we played the local girls school at Hockey - they beat the shit out of us. But made up for it at the social after the match!! (36 - 0, to the girls if I remember rightly).
