My advice for starting Raleigh

SnowGoose

Midshipman
Hello this is for those people who are to start Raleigh in 2020 and my little bits of advice.

1) Microfibre towels
On the kit list (the one I had anyway) it said to take x2 towels. Buy 2 microfibre towels because they fold easier to A4 size. Then I would recommend leaving them pristine in your locker and have 3 extra towels and just rotate using them.

2) vanish stain remover
It's not on the kit list, but just buy some and keep in your suitcase or personal locker. Sometimes stains can be tough. Also dont buy fabric conditioner as it affects the kit something to do with being non flammable.

3) you get issued socks but I would recommend going to mountain warehouse and just buy plain black thick hiking socks as these look like the ones you wear. And then you can have ones for your kit muster. You get thick black socks, thin black, and thick white socks. So ones which match them.

4) buy kiwi foam to clean the bottom of your shoes

5) bring extra pants/boxers for your locker and dont touch them

6) bring extra hangers

7) bring in ear headphones (you're only allowed one ear in) but it is so much easier when you want to make calls. Make sure your earphones have a microphone on them

8) buy thermals and wear them under your kit (just make sure its not showing)

9) buy waterproof plain black gloves for dartmoor (the ones issued are not that good apparently)

10) buy the kiwi Express sponge for polishing boots

11) dont buy parade gloss just buy normal black polish

12) general personal locker items: some stuff isnt on the kit list but just put it in your personal locker like vaseline moisturiser etc. Don't have anything you're not supposed to have in there though. Vaseline and things like that are generally ok

Do you get 3 lockers now for all the extra kit??

If you're referring to locker, personal locker, and suitcase - no.
The suitcase you arrive with gets stored away in a closet with all the other recruits and you leave contraband in there.
The main locker is just where your kit lives.
The personal locker is a section of your main locker it's the size of a small safe and random things go in there I suppose.

Having separate kit for kit musters is not advisable as it does not show an ability to look after the kit you've already got. You will be found out......

To be honest, the volume of kit issued is rapidly diminishing.

Word on the street is No3's (short sleeved "trop" shirts)are being ditched so main rigs will be RNPCS -4's (or 8's in old money), 1's & Trops (when req'd).

In relation to towels I had an old kit list for some reason of x2 towels. Other people had updated ones of x3 towels so taking 3 towels is fine.

As for the socks and pants I agree you shouldn't have extra kit. I'm just passing on tips I've been told by staff at prnc etc and everyone does the display pants thing

This post has gone off topic.
This post isn't about me it should be about helping those who are starting Raleigh

Just want to clarify be sensible taking extra kit like socks and towels. I know people who have taken 4 towels and it's been ok. Also yes been advised by different people about the socks and pants spares. Just be sensible ok respect the kit list but at the same time you have a suitcase you can bring which is stored away which what I plan to do is store extra shower gels and things like that in when I run out. Perhaps you could do the same with boxers in case you get tears in them.

I'm confused, have you already started at Raleigh, or have you yet to join?

Post #6 you say you're passing on advice you got on PRNC, post #8 says you joined on Dec 8th.

I could give advice for those going to Raleigh.
Would be over half a century out of daye but still very relevant.

On Christmas leave at Raleigh atm.
Also yes I am passing on bits of advice from prnc staff (but to be fair Raleigh staff also said the same thing about display boxers)

Mmmm...

The distinct absence of any reference to the burning dilemma, 'Which Iron was bestest?', severely limits the usefulness of the advice from these young throbbers, whoops, thrusters...
