And we'll still have the Red Arrows sucking funds from us. Not forgetting pointless airbases that do nothing but house boys clubs.

And the black cats.

The Black cats don't cost £8 million a year. And that is a conservative figure.

The RAF are pretty smart. They have anticipated the upcoming Defence Cuts > http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article6917297.ece

They have protected what they need to protect and when Cameron realises that he needs to slash and burn what remains of Britain's defences he will have no choice but to target the Navy. The Army is pretty fire-proof because it is up to it's neck in Afghan alligators. Anyone who thinks that RN will see a manned, operational aircraft carrier is dreaming.

Afghanistan and the recession have put the final nail into Britain's real defences.:-

The proposals were ordered by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, the new chief of the air staff, and the air force board ahead of the 2010 spending round. It comes with the RAF ordered to find £200m in cuts and ensure all possible available resources are diverted to Afghanistan.

Pretty smart play the the RifRaf…

They offer up 80 clapped out jets already due for retirement and get to keep all their new and shiny fast air intact.

Got to hand to to the Crabs, they play this game brilliantly. Alas, the Navy are utterly crap at this game.

Dalton the new boy isn’t being overly bright. Nobody with any sense offers any “savings†before they are told to give some. The Air Force should have learned that lesson in the ‘70s but clearly hasn’t. In the early part of this Century, the Maritime IPTs gashed a significant quantity of stores as a surplus stock review. Then along came the Joint Inventory Optimisation Initiative with a target of reducing stock values by 20% across the board. Did the argument that Maritime had already “optimised†their inventory get them very far? Go on, give a guess.

They've done exactly the right thing here though. Offering up Aircraft and bases that are shutting with no investment anyway. They are being very clever. Probably because they have more spare time to think about these things than the RN or Army.

Well, the more you do, the more you learn. That's how it normally works, anyway.

If you fail to see the strategy behind the RAF doing this then you clearly haven't learned much yourself.

I don't understand how this would work. Are the Guardian suggesting that the 2 carriers would be shared between UK and France? Or that each country would put their carrier at sea at any one time?

In the first instance, since we are opting for STOVL and the French are going for CATOBAR, our aircraft will not work on their ship and vice versa. Never mind work-ups, transfer standards, bi-lingual signage etc.

In the second instance, would France defend the UK in our National interests, and would reciprocate by defending France in her National interests whilst our carrier is at sea? Or will both countries defend EU interests on a rota basis as part of an EU Navy?

Can't help but think (hope!) this story is bollocks.

Clown_Puncher. Strategy? You're a funny man. A rare thing these days.

When you've been through this bollox for the 5th time, you'll become as p**sed off as I am.

Dalton should be drawing lines in the sand; not shouting "me, me Sir, I can pretend to do it". Note that one of his economies is the Harrier force (not new). Guess what INVINCIBLEs need and QUEEN ELIZABETHS will need. While we're at it, Nimrods are very useful and on "our" side. So Dalton's plans are? Oh yes, and another thing, the Air Force commited to provide the AEW for the Navy. If you get a moment, look at his plans for 23 and 8 Sqn.

OK, fair does; the man's a genius.

I'm seeing this from the inside and watching it all happen slow time. The Harrier force is already winding down, there is a reason that they live in squalor and can barely keep the things flying. He is offering things that are already being wound up.

Take a step to the left off of your pedestal and calm yourself.

It all makes perfect sense if the EUS Queen Elizabeth is part of the European Navy…
