Mine Clearance Diver Entry

Hello,

I am currently in the process of joining the Royal Navy as a Mine Clearance Diver but have been told from day one that I could be in for an indefinite wait due to there being no diver training being conducted for the foreseeable future.

However my AFCO called me earlier in the week to inform me that the current policy for the diver recruitment process has been updated to:

All Diver candidates currently in the Recruiting Process are now to be offered the opportunity to revise their Branch of Preference to the following:

  • Marine (MNE)
  • Warfare Specialist (WS)
  • Warfare Specialist (Submarines) (WS(SM))

All candidates that enter service to the branches listed will undertake a minimum of 3 years in their revised Branch of Preference and then be offered the opportunity to transfer to the Diver Branch’.
I was just wondering how many others have received the same information and are considering one of these alternative roles instead of waiting for however long it might be until direct entry opens back up again?

Thanks

I’d say make sure you kept that as a written record, if you don’t, do the training and then try to transfer you may find yourself stuck in a trade you don’t want to be in.

Thanks for the reply,

That’s exactly what I’m thinking, could be a bit of a risk. I’m not overly interested in the roles that have been offered but could be the only way of making it to Diver.

Thanks for the Info Marksy.

"Marine (MNE)" - Pardon me if it's a daft question, but is that Royal Marine Commando ?
