The routes for obtaining Service Records depend on the dates of service of the person you are asking about.

Records up to certain dates (1917, 1923, 1931) are available via the National Archives' website:

Royal Navy ratings' service records 1853-1923 | The National Archives

Royal Navy officers' service records 1756-1931 | The National Archives

Later records can be applied for to Portsmouth using these forms:

  4. Sol, is there a time restriction on getting info? I would like my old man's service record, but big sister has always black balled me. I was under the impression that 25 years after death, the records were then in the public domain.
