Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Three Weeks ago i had a medical for the royal marines, now 5 years ago i had a brain tumour removed which had caused epilepsy, once it had been removed i have never had one since, the royal navy office has said that my medical has been referred to london to be consulted by specialists, any advice for opinions are very welcome, will they accept me?????

    Hello Mate,

    Welcome to RR.

I'm afraid this is another of those: "Only a qualified specialist in this particular field can give a definitive answer" ones.

For what it's worth, my advice is to beware well intentioned anecdotal tales as each case is very different in medical terms.

Hopefully the experts will say you are "Fit to Enter".

    Good luck!

PS: Check your PM's, I've sent some standard advice on medical referrals.
  3. A history of neurosurgery has barred every case I've seen. Sorry for the doom and gloom.

...and there's me trying to be subtle!

  5. Shame .
  6. Never mind Ninja ... at least you have the moral high ground. Nice to see an example being set for those less thoughtful members of the site.

  7. Nobody in my workplace gains any pleasure from turning candidates down, nor is it the intention to thwart ambition, but if someone's unfit, they're unfit. If you've got a problem with that then you're happy compromising the missions that we carry out and the personnel carrying out those missions. You might want to serve in a Navy like that, but I won't.

You are most definitely not in a position to turn ANYONE down in an online forum!

    Check you PMs.

Who are you? The fecking psychic surgeon.

I think the guy at least deserves a look in by a qualified Doctor who can review his medical records and examine him!

This topic is now unlocked, having checked the Application Form Information & Guidance Booklet (AFCO Form 5, March 2007), which is given to every candidate appling to join the Regular & Reserve Armed Forces

The following is an extract from Part 1, (Paragraph 1.8a for the purists)

"This table below and overleaf is not exhaustive and is for guidance only. Many conditions that are compatible with civilian employment and sport maybe considered incompatible with military service.

If you have a medical condition that is not mentioned below, or you are unclear about the impact of your medical history, you should seek the advice of the AFCO staff,

Please note the AFCO staff are not medically qualified and that the decision regarding medical suitability for enlistment is determined by selection medical staff.

....Neurological Disorders: Ongoing nervous system disease. Epilepsy or more than one seizure/fit after the age of 5 (although Benign Rolandic epilepsy is acceptable). Single seizure/fit within the last 5 years. Multiple Sclerosis. Complications following head injury. Hydrocephalus (with or without shunt). Severe recurrent headache (including migraine)"

I think we would all agree that even a psychic surgeon would be reluctant to give a definitive answer without first checking the individuals'medical history. It's best left in the hands of the Medical experts.
  11. Good luck with your application, please do ignore the ignorance of those on here that think they have 2 crystal balls. Every case is unique and different, you will be given the overall outcome once your application has been reviewed by a professional.

Good luck and keep us posted xxxx
