Medical issues

Hi, I’ve applied to be a warfare officer and have had a phone call with my AFCO and received the initial medical forms. When I was I filling out the forms I noticed that ulcerative colitis is something that might stop me from being able to apply, which is something I have.

Will this be something that will stop me from applying or is this something they will assess further in the medical?

Unless there is a doctor in the house. Prepare to receive few responses.

Just hope someone else has had similar issues!!

@Ying971 I have zero knowledge of your particular ailment but the way the medical system works is common to everyone applying. The RN will require a copy of your medical records from your GP and from them they will assess how you comply with the set standards. There are three possible outcomes a) passed fit to join, b) Permanently Unfit, c) Temporary Unfit where you will be invited to prove your ailment would not be a hindrance. i.e It used to be a problem but isn't any more for instance. There is an appeal system if you want to fight any decision.
Good luck with your application.

I know someone who was barred from joining the RAF reserves with this.
As the forces tend to go by the same medical joining criteria I think that you may be rejected

Some of the medication can be quite harsh and reduce your immune system which can be a problem.
Sorry to have to say this.

@fishhead Thanks for the info, I'm hoping it'll come down to option c. My condition has never really been a problem, it's more just something that could be an issue if not managed i.e. taking my one daily tablet

@redmonkey I'll keep that in mind cheers, the medication I take doesn't weaken my immune system as my problem is quite mild. Hoping that I will be able to explain this to them should it come up as a problem while I'm applying.

You should be honest and declare it if you are prone to weakness in the lower abdomen , and yes they do check.
I’m not prone to weak abdomen,
I just have a tiny hernia which doesn’t even hurt or cause any kind of problems so..... would I fail the medical?

Tiny could become major during the rigour of intensive training/service in HM forces , I am not qualified to answer your query as to if you would fail the medical , contact your local AFCO.
