HMS Monitor to open to the public

Plans to provide public access to a First World War warship in Hampshire will be looked at next week. HMS Monitor, launched in 1915 and used to ferry British and Commonwealth troops during the Gallipoli campaign, is currently docked in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The M33 coastal bombardment vessel was also used in 1919 for the Russian Civil War, covering the withdrawal of Allied and White Russian troops from north Russia. It was acquired by Hampshire County Council's museum service in 1990, but can only be viewed from the dockside.

Alex Salmond’s hubris; Scotland’s naval conundrum

To say that complacency is oozing out of Holyrood is an understatement. It is easy to forget that Alex Salmond is not the leader of an independent Scotland, with an autonomous military and a healthy defence budget.

Not quite sure who is spouting the most bullshoite, Wee Eck or the writer of that article!

However, the fact remains that the RN is so overstretched that they are giuarding just about every hotspot and leaving UK to be looked after by a few small patrol craft.

Remember last year when it took two days to scramble a warship (from wither Portsmouth of Plymouth, can't remember which) to check out the Russians in our northern waters. Overstretch? Nah, the Defence and Strategic Review says not so there can't be.

Don't be surprised if this Iranian site appears somewhat partisan in its reporting of issues concerning 'The Little Satan'. ;-)

Model maker creates courgette submarine

A keen gardener and model maker has launched a new submarine – called HMS Courgette. Eric Rayment, 65, could think of nothing better than making a homage to Gosport’s HMS Alliance when he discovered the 14lb vegetable growing in his garden.

Plans to improve Daedalus get the go-ahead

Millions of pounds could be spent to attract commercial air companies to Daedalus.

Last night Fareham councillors agreed to back ‘significant investment’ – worth millions – at the airstrip as part of the Solent Enterprise Zone.

If all parties concerned agree, the airstrip could become licensed, which means commercial airlines and business jets could land there. At the moment it is unlicensed so only light aircraft and private jets are allowed to use the landing strip.

At the risk of being labelled a pedant. The proud modeller is holding a Marrow not a Courgette.

Liked, as Mr Rayment is clearly on our side, and he's clearly not a man to cross.
