Maritime Security?

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi,
I'm looking at leaving the RN in around 18 months and want to start getting my options in order.
I'm considering a career moving into the maritime security sector but am struggling to find information from people who are not just trying to sell me a course! Does anyone have any experience in this field that they would care to share.
Basically, I'm looking for any information from mandatory courses (and recommended extras) through to the actual type of work involved. Additionally, I am planning to emigrate to Oz on leaving, so any information regarding work in that region would be appreciated. If anyone can provide rough salary/wage figures then that to would be awesome.
I'm a SM Warfare Officer with responsibilities as OOD - SPF qualified, so experience is everything that goes with that role. I doubt very much that I have the sort of experience of a lot of guys here but I do have some.
Cheers for any help anyone can provide.

For deployed teams firms are asking for things like weapon quals, first aid, sea survival and VHF DSC quals etc. For management /ops types jobs then all round OLQ's coupled with a knowledge of things maritime will help. I know of some people employed to provide int briefs/analysis so any experience of that would help. If you've done a trip in the IO then of course that will be of value.

As you can imagine, this is quite a close-knit community that relies on credentials and reputation, so it is understandable that applicants have the right qualities/qualifications for the task - hence why they will try to provide you with necessary courses before offering you employment. (Would you insert a new/unknown person into a new team in a foreign or hostile environment, just on his say so that he has all the right credentials? If that person has conducted company training first, at least each team member knows what they have been through. SSOs/SPOs/PFOs have very high "Walt Alarm" systems...)

Maritime security is a very lucrative industry at the moment, and many recruitment agencies will provide employment opportunities in return for training courses. If you are prepared to invest some time and money (not a problem on your pop star wages, I am sure!) and successfully complete the required training, then the companies will often offer you a open-ended position as a self-employed contractor.

There are many companies out there - some more reputable than others - but CTP often allows MAST Ltd. (headed by ex-RM/RN personnel) to conduct job opportunity presentations at Resettlement Offices. Send your CV directly to them (they will provide all training required).

Also, join this CP forum, which often advertises 'internally' for SSO/SPO positions overseas.

One of many that have cropped up. Not the best but not the worst either. They are based in the US (there are more than enough UK-based organisations that provide the service and are probably more suitable for British ex-Armed Forces personnel); personnel who are intending to become SSOs/SPOs on US vessels are advised to ensure their qualifications are compliant with US legislation, so must ensure they have included "US Code 33 CFR Part 101-106 & Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA)"* in their SSO/SPO Certificate. This due to the fact that the US legislations are tighter than those outlined in the International Ship & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

    * - To clarify: MTSA is a US law, everything that floats in and out of US must comply with this law.
  6. I thought as a Warfare Officer you would have used your nouse and contacted the Career transition Partnership or am I expecting too much of my superiors?

The CTP and RightJob have been very helpful too me, give them a try.
  7. One of many that has poped up? Been around for years, owns its own fleet of dedicated escort vessels and is UK based.
Most of the marshals are british.
    Thanks for reading.
