Lt Commander M.R.Todd - Private Memoir

I’m researching submarine movements/activities through Lerwick, Shetland Islands during WW2 and in particular the shore base here in Lerwick, HMS Ambrose II, the forward Base for HMS Ambrose in Dundee. To this end I am particularly interested to find a copy of “A long time underwater” the privately published memoirs of Lt Commander M.R.Todd which includes a piece on his time at HMS Ambrose II in Lerwick during 1943. The papers reside at the Imperial War Museum but haven’t yet been digitised so not available as a paid for download and, with the current Covid situation, I can’t see me travelling from Shetland to London any time soon to visit the IWM personally. I wondered then if anyone had a copy of these papers and might have been willing to extract the article on his time in Shetland and email it to me...? Also if anyone has any information on HMS Ambrose II generally I would be very pleased to hear from them. Many thanks.

Lt Cdr Todd crossed the bar not that long ago.

The IWM has a copy of the memoir but it isn't the only holder of a copy. The British Library has one too.

It's unlikely that it will be digitised, it's over 400 pages long.

Hi, thanks for that, I wasn't aware that the British library had a copy as well. I had previously gone through my local library to see if they might get the memoir on loan but sadly no luck there so, as noted in my original post, I was hoping someone just might have a copy and be able to let me see the part dealing with his time in Shetland. Anyway thank you again for replying.

I actually have membership of the British Library and am planning to spend a day there fairly soon on research.

If I have time, I'll call this volume up and look at the relevant parts for you.

There are large scanners on the floors in the library which scan and send to e-mail.

Well that would be really kind of you and very much appreciated! As far as I can establish he wasn't in Shetland very long so I assume that the part dealing with this may not be lengthy but it would be so interesting to see what he has to say about what was happening with HMS Ambrose II and generally what was going on around the submarine activity in Lerwick at that time. Can I pm you with my email address? Thank you again. John

Yes, that's fine, feel free to PM me.

Thanks but just had a look around and not sure that I can pm you using my account...? Maybe I'm missing something, sorry!
