Loss of HMS Royal Oak, 13th/14th October 1939

War Hero
13th/14th October 1939 was the date of the first battleship loss of World War II, HMS Royal Oak. Torpedoed at her berth in Scapa Flow, 833 men died with her, including over a hundred boy seamen, not yet 18 years old. She lies there still, a designated war grave.

I was serving on the Apollo when we visited Scapa Flow in the early 70s.
The WEO, whose father was a Royal Marine who went down with the ship, laid a wreath.

Very sad indeed. RIP all those lost.
