Logistics Officer

Hiya!

I'm considering joining the RFA as a Trainee Logistics Officer (I'm aware they aren't recruiting right now but ive been informed it shouldn't be TOO far off, fingers crossed.) I was in the Army in the RLC for 4 years too so I'm hoping that might help my application.

What i was wondering is if anyone knows much about the general postings/ship time? For example, i know it's supposed to be 4 months at sea, 3 months leave. But does that actually happen? Or will i be expected to live on a Naval Base somewhere? I used to work in an Army recruitment centre so i know they'll jazz it up to sound great but i just wanna know 100% facts about the job.

Also, if there are land bases for the RFA, where are they?

Any help that anyone could give me would be great! I'm really excited to join, but i don't wanna be stuck on some shitty naval base doing **** all!

Its not 4 months at sea, its 4 months appointed to a ship (this can be varied by mutual agreement) ie if your ship is in refit you will spend 4 months hanging around a repair yard possibly living in a hotel. Leave is earned for every day spent appointed (0.6898 : 1), so the longer you do, the more you get and vice versa. Over the years it should roughly average out as 7 months appointed to a ship and 5 months paid leave.

(outside this COVID19 fun) it is unusual for an RFA to go longer than a couple of weeks at sea without a port call somewhere.

Training (which does not earn or burn leave) quite often is done on Naval Bases (they run the courses for us, so go figure), also berths at Naval Dockyards (ours and our NATO allies) are free and so we often tie up to them.

Also, if there are land bases for the RFA, where are they?

We do not have our own bases, however we have shore based personnel working at HMS Excellent (Whale Island), HMS Raleigh, HMS Collingwood, HMS Sultan, FOST (Plymouth), Defence College of Logistics (Worthy Down), Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, MCSU (Portsdown Hill), MOD Main Building, MOD Abbey Wood, Cammell Lairds (Birkenhead), A&P (Falmouth) and Norfolk, Virginia, USA (exchange to the USN's Military Sealift Command). Ashore postings are volunteer only, you dont have to do one unless it suits you.

Ah but hanging around naval bases complaining how shitty they are is a right of passage in the RFA. 99% of the info you will need has already been asked/answered somewhere in these forums. If after searching you still have an original question post it and we will try and answer it.
