Dear Les,

Thank you for your email to my colleagues.

It’s wonderful that you have a personal connection to film in our archive. I can request for ADM 5936 to be digitised. This process does take several weeks; however, once complete, you will be able to view the film on our film website (https://film.iwmcollections.org.uk/) free of charge.

If you have any further queries, please do let me know. Otherwise I will be in touch again once the film has been digitised.

Kind regards,

Harriet

What a great response! Superb......I look forward to watching it. And the contact details are great to have if any other buried treasures come to light in the future.

Good work, shipmate.

Good work indeed, Dusty (and of course Mackan) - I can think of some old FIFEs who will be more than happy to act as film critics regarding what actually happened - I've heard some quite funny dits along with the more serious and distressing aspects of what happened in Dominica following Hurricane David.

Not David but another of Fife's awards , I was on her 70 to 73 and the '' Tabua '' was in a large display case on 01 deck cross passage.

In '68 Fife whilst on passage from Auckland the ship rescued 79 passengers and crew of the MV TUI LAU which had run aground on a reef near Totoya Island. During a visit to Suva , Fiji the Islanders of Viwa presented the ship with a '' Tabua '' in recognition of their efforts in rescuing the crew of Fijian ship TUI LAU , a few days earlier.
The '' Tabua '' is a whale's tooth and plays an important part in Fijian ceremony. It is formally presented at a male only ceremony and may not be taken out of the country without the Government's permission.
Fife was only the second Royal Navy ship to be so honoured.

And thanks to the good people at IWM here it is - albeit only about a quarter of the film - missed the banyan in Nelson's Harbour and my appearance and only really shows the Occifers, not the ratings actually doing the disaster relief although LCK Reg (can't remember last name0 gets a look in at the end - shame but at least some bits remain

Dig in Pontius and Waspie et all Wafus

A big BZ Dusty for your perseverance in achieving this.

Sadly, I don't suppose the producers would have got round to including how one of the senior officers in FIFE had to be locked in his cabin when he started showing serious signs of burnout from over-exertion on his relief efforts, for which he was subsequently and deservedly awarded the OBE.

I also understand that the CPO CK who was sent up by helicopter to liaise with the rather difficult manager at the then very small airfield at Canefield finally resolved the problem "manually" for which he subsequently received the BEM.
