Likelyhood of being able to switch roles

Hi guys,

I put my application in as a Mine Clearance Diver and got a call back from my AFCO advising that due to an accident in another branch involving a diver getting killed they suspended applications for divers. She advised that as they're processing applications again there is a roughly 4 year waiting list to apply, but stated that there is potentially the opportunity to join, serve a few years, and then switch over when/if the role becomes available. I want to know what the likelihood of me being able to do that is, as I've got my mind set on diving and would firm it out for a few years if it meant I could switch eventually. Does anyone have any firsthand experience with switching roles down the line? Cheers.

HI Jm0,
There is always a possibility of changing over Job roles once you are in service. Sometimes it can take a few years. It all depends on which role you are in at the time and what the manning situation is at the time you apply to switch roles.

However I think you need to go back to your AFCO and ask again about the diving role. From what I understand the first PEDA's are taking place in November with the successful applicants gaining entry to HMS Raleigh in January. The diver Branch has been 'treading water' (excuse the pun) for a couple of years but I believe things are moving again.

Cheers Jackthedusty,

She did mention that training was starting back up but said due to the backlog it's probably not worth putting an application in for a few years. If that isn't the case I'll harass them until I get in but the way I had it described to me, there's almost no point. Thanks again for the quick response!

There is a system in place for those wishing to be MCD to serve a minimum period as either a Warfare Spec, RM Commando or Submariner Warfare Spec. The time is 3-4 years and then you will be shortlisted for when MCD training commences.

If I were you I’d make sure you are happy doing the above jobs for four years and that you may not always get selected for MCD. I’d also make sure you have a copy of the Recruiting Temporary Memorandum that states that!

Hope that helps.

Although a long ways into the past I did the same kind of thing.
I joined in the now defunct branch of seaman gunner as that was the quickest route into the Andrew at that time.
About 9 years later I applied and succeeded in going to another branch and re trained as an SBA now an MA I believe As I was well into my 9 year service (time started at 18 in those days) I was required to sign on for another 5 years
Not too much trouble depending on requirements in branch going to as well as trade being left..

As suggested above - branch transfers can and do take place...but I would exercise caution on this issue. Don't take it as a given. There is no 'right' to branch change...it depends on the needs of the service which is always (at least in my experience) the prime driver. If there is a vacancy in the branch that you wish to change to, AND the branch that you're in can let you go then it's happy days all the way.
