Life at worthy down as a RFA chef apprentice

Speaking to the recruitment people, it's a very new move (as has already been indicated previously) and it sounds like nobody has been trained there yet. A lot of redevelopment has gone on there so the facilities are all new. I'm also wanting to know what it's going to be like.

From what I understand, it's a new tri-service base near Winchester so Army and RAF chefs will be there as well as RFA/Navy.

Am currently at worthy down we’re the first class here (RFA) the facilities are modern you’ll be staying with RN in phase 2 accommodation, our course had some teething problems just be prepared to follow RN rules. Winchester is a while away and is a pain to get to unless you have a car nothing much to do on weekends do suggest bringing a tv, best of luck

Staying with RN and no T.V? at Raleigh we stayed with RFA 6 to a room and each room had a TV, in Galahad Block and access to our kitchen there also, what teething problems? do they expect salutes and marching etc?

Thanks for that, good to know.

What's the course like and what's the subject matter like?

Is there anything that you did to prepare for the course or is there anything you'd recommend doing? Is there a particular book that they use or do they give you everything during the course?

Out of interest, what was your interview like and what sort of questions did they ask?

I will message you, but as for books to read advice don't bother, the RFA will teach you they way they want you to work,

You were lucky then, must have been a lot of your lot that needed training as RN did stay in Galahad as that was the Part 3 training accommodation block for those of us on our LH courses.

They won’t expect saluting and marching as you’re civvies. More likely to be routines; last I heard, the stores side of the school is doing a full classroom version of “hot desking” where you could be in a different classroom every day.

We did get a couple of guest Matelots doing an L/H course but only there a couple of weeks at most, fine bunch of blokes but on the whole between Stewards, Cooks, Deckies it was a fair number of us.

No you are not expected to salute and march. RN rules as in they had weekend leave suspended and so did we, no alcohol consumed or stored in your mess or the building. Follow covid guidelines the base has implemented and don’t walk around with your hands in your pockets lol there are loads of facilities on the base but due to the current pandemic they are closed
