I reckon that's a good one for @sweetpea if she's about. An absolute gem on service history stuff.

Then again some of the older duffers maybe of use on this too ;)

The C stands for Chatham, which would have been his home port, others were P-Portsmouth, D-Devonport and going back to WW2 I believe L-Lowestoft, there may have been others I can't recall what the J stands for mainly because it wasn't in use when I was issued my number in 1960, sweetpea would be you man for the rest.

Some more information on this site http://www.godfreydykes.info/ROYAL NAVY OFFICIAL NUMBERS [RATINGS].htm

J was the letter given to the seamen branch. The L prefix stood for Lee on Solent for FAA ratings followed by F.

So very sorry for the delay with my reply, sadly I have illness in the family, so little free time at present to spend online. :(

Usually (in order of appearance on the rim) the medal will be inscribed with
A. Service Number
2. The persons Initials and Surname
3. Rank (ie, L.E.M. = Leading Electrical Mechanic).
4. Military division, in this case, RN.

J.S.I.R.N I'm guessing Junior Seaman of something in the RN. but I'm not sure.... and sadly I have come across this before but I just can't remember at the moment. Sorry.

Janner, I'm definitely Female... Now go and sit yourself on the naughty step for one hour.

JSI, Junior Seaman Instructor?

But I would tend to lean towards Joint Services something. The medal would also have the ship or establishment that the person was serving on.

Yes Branch Hopper, it might be 1. As far as I can recall, the rank appears just before the RN or RM stamped on the medal rim.

I understand your logic Onions, and you may be right, but the Rank is usually noted on the medal.

There are a few examples listed below (I've linked to the Chester Medals website) where there are a few GSM that were awarded to RN personnel listed, as you can see the details given have been taken from the rim of each medal. The Campaign is identified by the Bar on the medal.
LINK: http://www.chestermedals.com/shop.php?c=27
RN Campaign Bars include...
  • Palestine 1936-1939
  • South East Asia 1945-46
  • Palestine 1945-48
  • Malaya
  • Yangtze 1949
  • Canal Zone
  • Cyprus
  • Near East
  • Arabian Peninsula
  • Brunei
The medal is also awarded for:
Minesweeping 1945-51
  • Bomb and Mine Clearance 1945-49
  • Bomb and Mine Clearance 1945-53
  • Bomb and Mine Clearance Mediterranean
  • Berlin Airlift
