LET transferring from Navy to RM

Hi all,

bit of background first. WE submariner on LET’s course. Done just over five years now but I feel like I’m missing something career wise. It’s always eaten away at me that I should have joined the Marines or Army as a lad rather than the submarine service. I don’t regret my time, I’m 100% more prepared and settled now than I was back then. But I’m not getting younger. I want a more hands on, active and physically demanding role. This year and a half LET’s course has helped me realise that.

Im looking for advice regards to the service transfer I’d have to go through and process. But also taking account I’m half way through a career course. I do have a return of service but I’m under the impression it’s for when I complete it. I’d also be interested to hear about any advice or other options you can think of.

Thanks again

Out of interest, what’s the length of your return of service after killicks course??

I think that there might be some coverage for instances like this in Chapters 51 and 52 of BR3.

Return of Service is Ch 53

I'm hoping that you will get a more detailed response from another poster later, perhaps Ninja S, although he's only an occasional visitor nowadays.

To ask specifically about any RM possibilities open to you, consider posting on the special RM forum as a fallback option.

Two and half years. So I know potentially I could get a transfer approved inside that time but that's depending on clearance. Completing career course would be good for qualifications for eventual civvi side. It's a lot to think about.

Cheers, I appreciate your reply. I will give them a read. Hopefully give me a better understanding.

Not 100% sure what trades they take apart from Wafu's and Medics?
I’m sure I remember stokers being able to as well?!
Anyway, irrelevant really.
If you did leave the course etc. that’s a lot to give up, with regards to civvy quals and all that. Would you still be able to do it age wise (RM) if you completed your ROS?
Also I gather you wanted to keep it slightly off the record as you haven’t asked your Div S.R/ D.O and that’s why you ask on here??

Yeah it is a lot to give up. Paycut, qualifications etc. I'm 25 now and will have finished this course at 26. With upper age limit of 32 at RM's that does give me time. I'm not sure the navy would enjoy a transfer request on completion of this course though. Yeah I haven't spoken to my DO or Career manage yet.

As sol stated, a recruiter will give you a better answer, one will be along at some point I imagine.
I was just being nosey.

Good luck though.

The Chapter you are after in BRd 3 (1) is 48, Para 4811:
a. Commanding Officers who consider applicants suitable in all respects for transfer from their present Service to a specific RN or RM specialisation, having successfully completed any aptitudes or acquaints as appropriate, should make written application to CNR (for attention of CNR RP). A copy of the applicant’s latest SJAR is to be included.

b. CNR will forward details of those recommended and suitable for entry into the RM to PSO CTCRM Lympstone for allocation to a Potential Royal Marines Course (PRMC) at CTCRM. CTCRM will liaise direct with the parent ship or establishment to arrange the date of the PRMC and ensure that the applicant is medically fit.

c. Ratings recommended for transfer to the RM, and all other ranks applying for transfer to the RN, will be documented and medically examined at an Armed Forces Careers Office. CNR will liaise with the Career Manager for a release date.

d. Personnel allowed release from the RN to enter the RM, or vice-versa, will cease to receive pay and allowances in the rank/rate they are leaving on the day before they enter the RN or are attested into the RM, as appropriate. Personnel will normally enter the RM in the rank of Marine 2, subject to requirement and CNPS approval. e. Applications from individuals serving abroad will be considered but, if successful, transfer to the other Service will not take place until the individual returns to the UK in the normal course.

I had one of my AB's try to go RM. He had to request manning clearance through the BM, when that was approved he then had to go through all the medicals (which he wasn't successful as he had a rugby injury that he went to sickbay for painkillers. You will need to be clear of any injuries - the same as if you were joining from outside). Then PRMC etc and then you will be allocated, as per if you were a civvy. you hand your RN ID Card in at 2559 and join the RM at 0001.

As you are an ET and we are apparently short of them (I would beg to differ working in CWD), you may not receive manning clearance. Also, don't believe the dockyard urban legend that you can only be refused a branch TX twice and they have to give it to you!

Good luck in your quest to be cold, thredders and wet.
