I won’t labour on the eloquent posts above. Especially Alfacharlie .
As per your previous posts, you are an ET of some flavour. If you are hanging out for quick promotion (and there is nothing wrong with that). I would focus on your Phase 2 course to get GTS (gained trained strength). Essentially making you deployable and on the first step towards getting OPS (completing your ET task books at either the engineering training squadrons at Guzz or Pompey).
Now, some MAY get selected for the fast track scheme. Maybe shaving off 18 months of promotion to LH. This isn’t a given and is based on the merits of the rating. I’ve seen some good guys and girls not get selected at their fast track boards and are mightily gutted. The truth is, you could get selected for LH as fast or faster than a non fast track.
With regards to boarding parties and all arms. If you like wearing green and shitting in woods. Maybe join the RM? Not being an arse, the Navy has spent a lot of money on your fixing comms gear. For those that know, the boarding party is a massive ballache. I’ve done it and you don’t get released from your daily jobs on board. It is in addition to, your other jobs.
If you have just done a watch and are looking forward to getting in your farter for some ‘alone time’ in your off watch and you hear hands to boarding stations, that could well be you off for a boarding for another 6 hours. Not much fun. You get to wear green (if that’s your thing) and do weapon handling tests all the time. No many other perks. I quite looked forward to getting my Chiefs so I could stop all that shizzle.
With regards to the all arms course, I’ve know a couple of branches achieve it. Mostly in branches the RM don’t have that specialisation, i.e. MA’s and gunners who go 148 BTY RA. You can’t just decide you fancy it and have a go. It has to be something they want. Naturally there will be other roles that attract the the AACC, I haven’t got my DEPCO’s folder at home to be able to tell you.
There are other options available for those feeling ‘special’ and want to do deep core communication. That’s above the classification of this website and that’s something that is published on the defence inter web. I’ve know one guy do it and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw him last month.
Long dit short, as many have said. Get on board, get SQEP, get some whole ship knowledge. The fleet is running white hot at the moment and the chances to go to places and do things most wouldn’t be able to do 10 years ago are becoming the norm. Greater engagement with NATO partners and entering Russian waters or working on CSG.
Just because you work in the MCO doesn’t make you any less important. An old RS said to me years ago “No comms, no bombs” or my personal fave “You can talk about us, but not without us”.
