Late fathers Naval history

PH53

Newbie
Good evening all
As a new member let me introduce myself
I am 67 years old and recently found out that my estranged father had died in 2018.
I have started to research my paternal family history.
I have found that on my birth cerificate it gives my fathers profession as a cook in the Royal Navy with a rating of PSM/X followed by a 6 digit number.
My father was 22 at the time of my birth in 1953.
Can anyone out there assist in what the prefixes mean and where can I find out about my fathers time in the Navy, duration ships etc.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards PH53

Would it be possible for you to write to her and ask her for her permission to apply for his service record?
